PPI’s how long do they take to work?
« on: April 07, 2019, 06:07:50 PM »

I've had episodes of odd gastric issue the past 11 months usually short lived - maybe 40mins around 16 times in the 11 months.  I've had ultrasound of my abdomen and all is normal, no gall stone, liver, kidney's. pancreas and spleen all OK. However as I've had a prolonged episode lasting on and off 4 days my GP had me do a test for helicobacter pylori, and wants me to start a PPI, just in case.

Test was done yesterday and I've taken the first tablet today, and feel quite nauseous (3hrs later), and nausea isn't one of my symptom - I get discomfort under my ribs & toward the centre after eating mainly, but also now getting it a bit before eating.  I know there are a few ladies taking them, so I just wanted a rough idea of how long it takes before I'm likely to feel better and will the nausea reduce?
TIA for any information that night be useful.

Why something so 'strong' when there are over the counter medications that might work?  Hopefully Taz will be along as she took some recently  ;)

I've tried regular antacids and they didn't help, but I don't  get heartburn - can't remember ever having it to be honest, although I now have it along with the nausea after the PPI  :-\

Won't be taking another one if this is par for the course TBH, feel worse than I've done all week......

This all started after a particularly bad food poisoning/gastroenteritis last May.  It only lasted about 12hrs, no vomiting but abdo pain and diarrhoea that was really brutal - worse than Norwalk virus, Salmonella or any other bug I've picked up before.....
Thanks for the input though CLKD.

Hi Sooze. Sorry you are feeling out of sorts at the minute but hopefully you will feel better soon. I am on Omeprazole for reflux due to a hiatus hernia diagnosed by endoscopy (gastroscopy). I remember that I had nausea for the first few days when I started them but this then disappeared. It's important to take it just as instructed. Most people are advised to take it on waking before eating or drinking anything although the leaflet does say with or without food. This is because the PPI needs to dissolve in a certain part of the stomach. I also drink a large glass water with mine. Hope this helps.

Your food poisoning sounds like campylobacter. I had that. Not nice.

"bugs" like those can strip the gut lining which may take months to resolve.

Tnx Taz  :great:

Tas2,
Thanks for that, it's reassuring to know that the nausea should improve - it's pretty bad at the moment and I've got the feeling that I'm pretty close to actually vomiting.  :'( I really don't like that sensation and, as a very bad sufferer from travel sickness it's a feeling I'm far too familiar with.   I did take it with a large glass of water 1hr before  eating (lunch), perhaps I would be better taking it before breakfast?

Hopefully it won't keep me awake otherwise I will be stopping and trying again at the end of the week, when I'm not working.  Couldn't feel like this at work .

Tas2
Once a day 1hr before food. Does say preferably morning but I got up late and breakfast was actually lunch, so perhaps that didn't help.

Thanks Taz2,
I actually had a pretty bad night.  Three times I rushed to the bathroom because I thought I was going to vomit and I had quite a bit of stomach pain, worse than usual so I'm going to give it a miss today and restart on Thursday, when I've got a few days off work.  On reflection I think I should have planned to do that, but you know what it's like when you're impatient to get something sorted!

I'm OK to continue on my probiotics while I'm taking it? (it's Pantoprazole 40mg BTW).
Thanks

I don't think that the PPI should make you feel this bad to be honest so it may be more to do with whatever you are being investigated for. The treatment for helicobacter is PPI (the pantoprozole is the preferred one for this treatment) plus antibiotics so it  may be that your doctor wants to get you established on these while waiting for results? I would phone the surgery and ask for advice. Do you get the results today?  As for the probiotic I'm not sure. I can't take them due to stomach pain, nausea and upset stomach each time I try. How long have you been on them for?

CLKD,
I'm eating normally and my appetite is fine.

Taz2,
The test has to be sent away as local labs don't test for it, and apparently it can take a few weeks to come back, which is why my GP wanted to me to start the PPI in the meantime. I'm going to drop her an email for advice.

I've taken probiotics previously when I've had a dodgy stomach and they have helped, I'll ask her about that too.
Thanks again both.
