Two more questions, can you help?
« on: April 03, 2019, 10:17:13 AM »

Hia meno fam!

I'll cut to the chase here. Should I be on treatment for vaginal atrophy? I'm 51 and peri on Oestrogel and Utro for the past 2 months.

I don't have any pain during sex, have been a little dry for a few years but nothing some loob hasn't solved. No other symptoms down there, apart from needing the loo more urgently at times just lately. Do I need some vagifem regardless just to hold off the inevitable? Do all women in meno eventually get it? Is having general hrt enough or must we have localised estrogen also? That's more than 2 questions already I know ;)

The other thing is that I'm on my 2nd month of 1 pump Oestogel and 100mg Utro x 14. I again this month didn't have a bleed.
Should I be concerned? I'm on a low dose Oestrogel bcz of "perceived higher risk" for BC as my mum died of BC age 50.

Would be grateful for any help girls!

Get some treatment for VA and see if your vaginal area benefits?  Have you read the appropriate threads, some ladies use other products too.

I have looked a few threads yes.

Learning lots from the meno family here. Seems like we're all in this together and forever  :foryou:

Hopefully - not  ;D - shared experiences are important.  4 me it was like razor blades up there  :o with intermittent urine infection-type symptoms, initially treated with anti-biotics until my GP saw a pattern. He was furious that my urine hadn't been sent to a Lab. for correct testing and suggested appropriate VA treatment.  He is married to a lady of similar age  ???

If you are getting urinary symptoms, eg urgency, frequency etc, some local oestrogen such as Vagifem might be advisable. It will hopefully stop it getting any worse and prevent you from getting UTIs, as there are a lot of oestrogen receptors in the bladder and urethra. Many women need both systemic and local oestrogen to control symptoms. As you probably know, VA is for the rest of one's life so needs to be kept under control. IMHO, nearly all menopausal women get this to some extent with urinary symptoms, vaginal dryness or both.

No advice to offer but also interested to know if we all suffer eventually. Last month I had thrush symptoms which I treated and seems to have cleared up but I do wonder if it's the start of va.

Was it thrush?  4 me that was intense itching high up, too high to reach  >:(.  My Gynae regisstra gave me pessaries but it's so long ago ..... I had stopped the Pill .

Maybe try VA treatment to see if symptoms ease?  I haven't talked to friends so don't know if everyone gets VA, I don't suppose that they do  :-\

Lack of oestrogen messes with the pH of the vagina and consequently it's biota, letting undesirable organisms get a foothold. I haven't had thrush but occasionally get BV. A dollop of Multgyn Actigel helps.

I bet most women our age do get some degree of VA but as you say, it's not talked about. Jane Lewis is doing a lot to change that, though. (Hurrah for Jane!)

Thanks girls!

Just reading a bit more about VA. Supposedly almost half of women postmeno experience VA and a lot don't approach GP through embarrassment and just live with it.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/vaginal-atrophy/symptoms-causes/syc-20352288

Is there a consensus here that one type is better than another? Creams, gels or pessaries etc? Brands even?

Thanks meno fam

Thank Birdy, I will do that on Monday morning don't you worry.

Just not sure what type to ask for, if one is favoured over another amongst users here.

Which one do you recommend?

"Many women may be missing out on treatment because they only relate VA to dryness and pain."

Exactly Stellajane, I am/was until yesterday one of them. I'm not too dry where it causes pain having sex(use loob)
so didn't think or even know about it till joining MM.

I got to the age of 50 never ever having had a urine infection or thush, then bam had 2 UTI's in the space of a couple of months. I had no knowledge to draw on to know that it was lack of estrogen to blame until one GP said....Oh it's common amongst menopausal women.

Now my symptoms are only urgency to pee on occasion, not had any accidents yet and want to get this addressed before any more damage is done.

I am kinda hopping mad to be honest that menopausal women are chucked in a pile by GP's and left to rot unless the claw hand and nail out of that pile and beg for help. We should be told a bit more what to expect when we hit meno age imo. Rant over!

What do you use SJ?

Oh thanks for bleed comms. I'm having a paid for mammogram next week, that's only 50 quid done through NHS. Do you know how much a scan would be?
