Hello ladies,

Does anybody know if you are able to continue using oestrogen before, during and immediately after hysterectomy? I think in the past HRT was stopped before most operations but wondered if that had changed since there is no increased risk of clots on oestrogen only patches?

I'm also thinking we would have operations when we were younger and still producing good quantities of oestrogen so using patches during the process wouldn't be much different would it?

I'm not having a hysterectomy at the moment so have nobody to ask. Just trying to get my head around the process now in case that's what happens in the future.

I'm not sure before a hysterectomy but after I wasn't allowed to start HRT until after 6 weeks.

Was any reason given for that Yorkshire girl?

Were you using HRT prior to the hysterectomy and had to stop or were you just unable to start for 6 weeks?

I don't know about before, but I've recently had a hysterectomy and started patches 3 days after.

I had it in January. 11 weeks now, it is quite a slow recovery, I certainly underestimated the surgery.I thought as I was young(ish ) fit and slim that i'd sail through but I've found it difficult and frustrating! As usually I am quite active, so it's hard to do nothing! I'm just impatient, I guess!😁
When are you having yours?

It is major surgery.  Patients are let out of hospital far too early!

Plan well ahead once you get the admission date: bake, cook, freeze - do any heavy shopping sooner rather than later.  That way everything will be to hand on your return home.

I had to wait a month after ovaries and tubes removed to start HRT ( for pathology results).  BUt if I hadn't had to waitI wouldve chosen to wake up from the op with a patch on. The  hormone  crash was brutal!!
But that is due to oopherectomy and  i think it might be different if you are keeping ovaries.

Clarekins. In my own experience recovery isnt as quick as they lead us to believe which made me frustrated and impatient too. But you will turn that corner. Dont be too hard on yourself. Its major surgery.

I'm glad to hear it's not just me!
They make you believe you can do everything after 6 weeks! I went swimming after 8 weeks and put me back about 4 weeks, can only walk for now.
Thought I'd be back to normal by now!

Please don't be sorry  clarekins that's really good to know. It's given me answers to some of the things I wanted to know but hadn't asked yet. I'm not at the point of having a hysterectomy yet but am thinking it may be a possibility at some point in the future hence my questions. I couldn't contemplate it without being able to continue with oestrogen. It's a big operation and will take a lot of thought. I will have a look at the site you mention that sounds like it might help.

Sorry you're still recovering it does seem to take its toll for quite some time. I hope things improve soon.
