TC, Hope you don't mind me joining in  :). Non alcoholic fatty liver is almost always the result of insulin resistance and a sign of metabolic syndrome - the first step to diabetes, even if you are not overweight and are not yet even 'pre-diabetic'. Falling levels of oestrogen make menopausal women more prone (often resulting in the spare tyre around the middle).

Assuming there are no other causes (some meds such as statins, for example), it is completely reversible by removing high carb foods from the diet, particularly sugar and all grains (think of fois gras - ducks and geese are fattened on grains to produce the fatty liver). Many people find that if they remove these carbs their other digestive issues resolve completely so things that appear as triggers for reflux/ibs/gastritis such as tomatoes (and even what appears to be lactose intolerance) may not cause problems once the sugar/grains are removed.

Thanks for your informative post. It's great to get help/advice and experience.
high cholesterol runs in my family. My level was o.k last checked as was my sugar level but to be honest I was surprised they were. And they are not likely to stay that way if I dont make some changes especially now I have fatty liver..I do not have a good diet. I eat far too much sugar and bad carbs.

I have downright abused my body over the years with eating disorders, . But you cant get away with it forever without repercussions.
I think an overhaul is needed.

I see we're both up at silly o'clock  ;D. I'm still waiting impatiently for the testosterone to kick in  ::).

It seems insulin resistance is insidious and often shows up many years before it's detectable by blood sugar levels alone (as much as 30 years). It's almost impossible to get the direct test in this country so HbA1c and an oral glucose tolerance test are used as proxies. HbA1c is the most common and I read yesterday that it misses 73% of cases of diabetes  :o :

Personally I wouldn't be concerned about cholesterol (unless it's too low). Higher cholesterol levels are protective, particularly in older women anyway. Triglycerides and HDL are far more important than LDL (hence why they rarely measure them on the NHS  ::) ) and the markers will all improve if you fix insulin resistance (with some exceptions - some people are hyper-responders to saturated fat, although it doesn't seem to correlate with poor health outcomes and isn't the cause of fatty liver).

I apologise, I'd forgotten that you mentioned previously that you'd had eating disorders. Although there can be long term implications, I have read so much that reassures me that you can make huge strides towards optimum health through diet at any age. As you can guess, I find the whole area fascinating and have seen my OH's health and attitude to food transformed. Less so for me as menopause has put a bit of a spanner in the works  ;D.

I have bounced between anorexia and bulimia several times. Diets always start off sensibly and healthily and then i get my ED head on and things go very wrong.
Cutting anything out entirely is seen as a no no by the ED clinic  particularly carbs.  cut carbs. Crave carbs. Binge . Purge.
My teeth have suffered and im sure my digestive system has. My periods stopped on several occasions. The last time for 2 years. Which has to have a long term effect on bone health which is particularly pertinent now I'm in meno. So it wouldn't surprise me if insulin resistance might also be an effect.
When I recovered from it last time I reached a healthy weight but when I was discharged from the clinic i didnt stop there i just kept bingeing. My brain didnt tell me I was full anymore. so now although I'm not bingeing I havent lost that in the last few years and am overweight by about 4 stone.
. My relationship with food is so complex. Im scared of triggering and going too far again. But I do need and want to lose weight and stop problems developing further with liver, diabetes, heart health etc  .
My current phychiatrist is an ED specialist. So I think I will mention it at my next appointment  maybe I could get some support whilst trying to lose weight.
Hope that's not TMI But it's very comforting to here you say it's never too late.

Yes really interesting. Isn't it a hard job though to completely cut out sugar?
And what happens when you start to feel iffy, like I do when my blood sugar drops.?
When I eat something sugary, I feel better...
