Starting Utrogestan - help!!
« on: March 18, 2019, 02:55:16 PM »

Hi ladies,

I'm up to half an evoral 25 patch in my very long-winded climb into trying to get on HRT. Had a consult with Dr Heather Currie who said I need to start on Utrogestan now at 100mg a night for the entire month since I've now been on my half patch for about 3 months with no utrogestan.

I have read here about others being put on 200mg. I AM supposed to go on 100mg only - am I?

I started this whole HRT thing when I was peri-meno but it's taken me so long to get on only half a patch (side-effects) that I'm now POST-meno!

I plan to take it vaginally. They are little round tablets - do I just insert with finger as high as possible? Will it just dissolve?

Any advice would be most appreciated - thanks so much!!

And breathe...

Hia, I'm Dem, and let me just say no expert here, but I can answer some of your questions.

If as you say you are post meno then taking 100mg Utro daily with your patch is standard procedure. Obv Doc C advised this so I'd go with what she said.
200mg Utro is standard for perimenopause, and taken on a cycle of 12 days, that's where your getting confused maybe.

Yes you just pop it up with your finger and push it as far as you can, kinda in the space where a tampon would go.
Most of us do it right before getting into bed, gravity will help it stay put while sleeping. Yes it will dissolve never to be seen again, wink!

Lastly try not to worry, take each day at a time.

Hi flaxhigh - as you are on a tiny dose of oestrogen (presumably 12.5 mcg which is half a 25 mcg patch?) - this is why Dr C has recommended that low dose for just a month. This will allow any lining that has built up to shed. 200 mg would be overkill for that amount of oestrogen. Also if you are using it vaginally that is ample  - and you might have to be careful that it is not too much for the dose of oestrogen as this can also lead to spotting if the lining gets too thin. What has she said to do after the month is up - re-visit depending on whether/how much you bleed? As your gradually increase your oestrogen dose then the likelihood of needing slightly more progesterone will increase, as your womb lining may well start to build up.

What does your own doc say?

Hi Hurdity,

Dr C said only use 100mg and I assumed for ever. She said I needed that just to balance any amount. I did ask her - do I need to take that amount since I'm on such a small amount of oestrogen and she said:

'Some form of progestogen or progesterone (Utrogestan) should be taken with any estrogen. Now that you have had no periods for at least a year, Utrogestan can be taken in dose of 100mg daily at bedtime (bedtime because it can cause some sleepiness).'

She didn't say anything about it being for only a month at that dose nor raising it to 200mg (I didn't raise the 200mg dose) when I got on to a whole or even 2 patches (my eventual aim).

My doc says nothing other than: don't go on HRT! I'm on my own on this. However, I did see Prof Studd (though peri-menopausally as it was 3 years ago...that's how long it's taken me to get up to half a patch - constantly re-trying) and he put me on the usual oestrogel 3 pumps plus 100mg utrogestan for 7 days in a cycle (and no utrogestan for first 3 months). I never was able to get on any oestrogel so have never taken the Utrogestan.

I might try and send another message to Dr C...don't know if she will reply though.

Flaxhigh, will you be taking Utrogestan every day with no breaks? I've just had my prescription and was told to take it for 25 days and then have break. I'm confused and post menopause. Eeek..

Hi

I am following.

I have just been to see a menopause specialist consultant as I am not tolerating my tablet form of HRT.

I am post menopausal and have been told to take 100mg every day alsongside oestrogel. I have been told to experiment with the number of pumps, up to a maximum of 4, always keeping the utrogestan the same. She also told me that if I feel crap on the utrogestan I can take it for 12 days at 200mg instead, so that I only feel crap on 12 days 😂.
But then she would try a mirena coil.

Not sure if any of that helps. X

I was told to take Utrogestan for 25 days then have a three day break. Is anyone else doing this and will it cause a period? I'm post menopausal ?

I had the same confusion with my gp. But gynae told me to take it continuously no break 100mg a night and I am post meno. It is assumed that having a break will trigger a bleed.
Some post meno ladies on here do have a break because they dont tolerate progesterone well.
