HRT and Periods
« on: February 18, 2019, 06:04:16 PM »

Hi Ladies,
I've been on HRT for a good few years now, I still get a bleed each month. Do periods eventually stop even if you are taking HRT?
Thanks

Evorel 50 and Utrogestan 200/12, I've been on it for around 4.5years. I'm reluctant to change as I get side effects and terrible anxiety, at least I can track it with this regime. I'm also very sensitive to progesterone, the utrogestan isn't great but it's the best I've tried so far.

If you want to be period free then move to a continuous regime where you take 100mg of Utrogestan every night x

Dotty. can I ask? Im on 200mg Utrogestan for 14 days a month. Im going on holiday on the day I'm due to finish the 14 days so I will start my period probably mid flight!
Can I take 100mg every day for 28 days instead? will it stop me bleeding?

Hi Spangles. These are not proper periods but just bleeds caused by the withdrawal of the progesterone each month. As Dotty says you need to be on a conti HRT if you want to be bleed-free although you may experience bleeding during the first six months as your body adjusts. Also if you are sensitive to progesterone then a conti regime might not suit you. You need to be 54 usually before using a conti HRT I think.

Thanks ladies,
Yes I am aware that theses are not real periods and are caused by the hormones, I was just wondering if natural periods actually stopped whilst taking hrt? I have tried conti before but it did not suit me at all😢
I'm having the most painful period at the moment, obviously not helped by fibroids, it's the leg pain that's terrible.

Hi Spangles some ladies don't bleed on Sequi hrt. I think I read somewhere that 20% of ladies don't bleed. X

Pinkjan4288 - hi, no unfortunately it doesn't work like that . If you switch to continuous before your body is ready then you will get breakthrough bleeding x

Hi Spangles. I think that your natural cycle still eventually stops while on HRT as the only way to find out whether you are still experiencing natural bleeding or whether you are post meno is to stop HRT and see if bleeding continues?

Sorry about your fibroids. Have you been offered treatment?

Hi Spangles,

the withdrawal bleed on HRT will likely continue as long as you take it. Mine stays mostly constant starting on the end of the progesterone phase, but sometimes it can start as late as day 7/8 of the estrogen, but only once a year ish, mostly on the first couple of days into the estrogen.

Most ladies have gone into actual menopause and the periods have stopped by 54, but that is the average.

I too am loathed to try any other form of HRT at the moment, though mine is far from ideal. I could not take the risk of increasing anxiety, let alone the physical symptoms which would leave me unable to work. Once I get to the 55/56 mark I will consider changing and going transdermal, maybe with a longer estrogen cycle if I can, as by then I hope that I will be post meno.

Hi Spangles - if you have fibroids and your withdrawal bleeds are painful - have you thought of having a Mirena coil fitted? This will reduce the bleeding, stop them growing and presumably help reduce the pain too? Do you think you would be too sensitive to it?

Hi ladies,
Thanks for your replies. I am far too sensitive to consider marena Hurdity. Peperminty, I totally get the reluctance to change because of anxiety, that's exactly my concern too. I've been in awful pain for 4 days now, all around my right ovary and going into my leg. I always get this but never as prolonged. If I was to be fortunate enough to get an appointment at the GP and possibly be told it's normal or be sent for a scan, everythiwould probably be lovely and settled like it has been in the past, therefore showing no abnormalities.
Thanks

It's a shame you can't tolerate the Mirena. Fibroids are abnormalities of course and often cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Have you been offered any treatment? It could be that due to the HRT they have increased in size/number since your last scan.

Hi Spangles,

that's the issue isn't it, by the time you get an appointment it stops hurting until next month. If you know roughly when it happens can you book in advance?

I don't relish having a bleed but rather that at the moment.
