Evorel Conti and heavy bleeding
« on: February 10, 2019, 10:53:35 AM »

Hi, I'm new to this forum and wondered if anyone has advice on what to do about extremely heavy bleeding while on Evorel Conti patches. I've been using the patches for 3.5 months, first 6 weeks were fine and helped combat the menopause symptoms I'd been experiencing for over 4 years (last period was 13 months before I started the patches). Then the bleeding started about 7 weeks ago and hasn't stopped since. It's horrific, so bad that I've been prescribed tranexamic acid which is used in trauma cases to stop patients literally bleeding to death. I'm having an ultrasound scan in 10days plus blood tests (like I need to lose any more blood!). My GP wants me to stop the HRT but I'm really reluctant as it's helped my menopause symptoms. Anyone else experienced this on Evorel Conti or have any suggestions? Many thanks.

Hi breakthrough bleeding can be expected in the first 6 months of starting any hrt.  It should settle after 6 months.  It could be the progesterone in the Evorel Conti that isn't suiting you xx

Hi Dotty, thks for the message. This is extreme constant bleeding 24 hrs a day for 7 weeks with large clots. Does that still count as breakthrough bleeding? I'm not sure I can put up with it for 6 months as I'm now getting all the signs of anaemia  :-\

Do you know what other options may be available if the Evorel Conti doesn't work for me? I've heard of FemSeven but also that it's been impossible to get hold of for some months due to a manufacturing issue. That's interesting about the progesterone possibly not suiting and something I'll definitely mention to my GP (who like many others mention, seems fairly clueless as to what other options I could try).  Any advice much appreciated  xx

Hi...I'm not sure if that can be classed as breakthrough bleeding.

A better alternative would be Oestrogel or oestrogen patches and Utrogestan as these are all body identical.  the progesterone in Evorel Conti is  a synthetic progesterone. xx

I had constant bleeding as you described for the first six months of a conti HRT and I swapped to a sequi regime which gave me manageable light bleeds which was better than continual bleeding.

Although it's horrible passing clots it's a good sign that your body's clotting mechanism is working.

Hi Taz2, thanks it's helpful to know others have had a similar experience, how did you cope with constant bleeding for 6 months? It's starting to really get me down. Do you know whether a sequi regime can be used if you are post-memo which I am (last period was 13 months before I started Evorel Conti)? Xx

You can use a sequi HRT even though you are post meno. The bleeding did affect me but I was determined to try for the six months but it became clear that things weren't going to change once I hit that magic number. There are a few of us on here who changed back to sequi. I'm now on an oestrogen only HRT after a hysterectomy for prolapse. If you are getting signs of anaemia then this should be dealt with now i.e. getting iron tablets prescribed in the correct dosage from your GP while you are waiting for your scan and results.

You may find that before beginning HRT you had fibroids and the stimulation of HRT can cause these to grow. I didn't realise I had any until the scans to check my womb lining during my six month bleeding marathon.

Have you tried searching our posts for "breakthrough bleeding conti HRT" ? It might give you some tips or reassurance.
