Need advice will HRT help or not?
« on: January 31, 2019, 10:10:44 AM »

Few weeks since I first posted.  I seem to have got my anxiety under a degree of control through CBT and still dealing with the crazy symptoms of Peri, however, every month when I am supposed to be ovulating, I have horrendous palpitations, heart racing from waking on a morning and subsides as the morning goes on.  This makes me feel wobbly and jittery and does set off my anxiety again.  I am currently taking menopace and also omega 3 daily which is really helping my mood.  Is it just a coincidence that this is happening during my most fertile week of the month.  I used to always have sharp lower abdominal cramps on ovulation day and pretty much could pinpoint when I had ovulated.  I haven't had this for a few months now and I am presuming I'm not releasing an egg anymore?  I am still having periods about every 23-28 days, however they are lighter. Would HRT help this or make it worse?  I have a history of anxiety and I often feel that GP's just put everything down to that, finding it hard to convince them that I'm anxious because of the physical symptoms I'm feeling.  Any advice about the HRT would be greatly appreciated.  :)

Hi Jodieh,

I am taking Menopace Plus, it has only started working in the last week or so after taking it for three months!  I had a complete hysterectomy years ago which is why I was taking HRT.

Now, the only symptoms I am not dealing with is the anxiety/heart racing.  That was the one thing that HRT seemed to control - for me.  It is such an individual thing.  But if you are able to take HRT then I would strongly recommend it.  I am not sure what it would do to your periods?!

I only stopped the HRT to give myself a break after 14 years, but if you look through posts on here a lot of women have been taking it much longer!

Good luck with whatever you decide

xx

Hi and welcome Jodieh,

there are no guarantees and the very short answer is you can only try.  Some women get it right first time with what they are prescribed, some have to hange the type and method of dosing 2 or 3 times, some of us have more than 5 goes at it to get the right one for their bodies and a few cant find the right thing and give up.  That's about the size of it to be totally honest.

Unless you try you will never know.  Oh and GP's are great at putting meno panic and anxiety down to our general mental health and are more likely to dish out antidepressants than hrt.  It is a common theme for theads on the forum.  Most of us know it is hormonal and not "normal anxiety" but not to put too finer point on it quite a few GP's have no idea about meno.

If you go armed already knowing that you can put your foot down and ask for hrt.  You may be one of the ladies for whom it  all goes right first time - but if you have any problems this forum is the best place to find the answers - good luck.

Thanks everyone,  I am off to the doctors later armed with lots of questions.  I just want to function relatively normally again and for about 1.5 weeks of the month at the moment I'm a complete mess.    :(

Hi there

Hope you got on OK at the doctors.

Re your periods - if you are having them every 23-28 days then it is likely that you are still ovulating. Period cycles tend to get shorter in the last stage of fertility before peri-menopause "officially" begins - although hormones begin to go awry during this time and some women start to experience menopausal symptoms. Most women expereince worsening pms at this point ( just before cycles start to length and ovulation becomes sporadic).

Depending on your age - you might find one of the combined contraceptive pills is helpful - in controlling your cycle - there are a couple that are similar to HRT, in that they contain bio- (=body-)identical oestrogen. (called QLAIRA and ZOELY)

Some women find a low dose HRT also helps to regulate the cycle, although some find it too strong at this point. If you want to start HRT then Femoston 1/10 would be a good one to begin with.

Dont let them fob you off with give you anti-depressants!

Let us know how you got on!

Also here is an article about peri-menopause you might find helpful:

Well after a trip to the GP she has prescribed HRT patches, Evorel sequi. She was lovely and said nothing ventured nothing gained. I feel very positive and just hope I can rid some of these awful symptoms. She feels that my anxiety may lesson too, however recommended that I continue the CBT.
Thanks for all the advice guys. This site is a breath of fresh air it really is 😁

Yes it was a minor miracle, we only have one women's health GP in our surgery and she is booked weeks in advance, I rang just after lunch and they offered me a 6.30pm appointment that had just been cancelled. Let's hope it was a sign as I have been so indecisive about HRT, but I can't carry on the way things are I'll try anything 😁
