Asking a really silly question about ovulation
« on: January 27, 2019, 04:27:24 PM »

OK, I know in advance this is a super silly question, but I genuinely don't know the answer.

Right, so from what I understand, you're already born with all the eggs you'll have?

And then as you start to use them up and have trouble ovulating, then you're in perimenopause? That can happen when you're in your late 30s, or 40s, or whenever.

But what happens if you've spent many years on the pill, and that's stopped you ovulating?

Do you still have 'a store' of eggs you need to use up before you get to menopause?

And what happens if you start taking the pill during perimenopause? Does that press the pause button on your own ovulation and delay menopause?

Sorry if this is a stupid question...

Hello Focus,

This is a very interesting question, the answer may not be simple though. This is a good article on this subject:

https://www.rbmojournal.com/article/S1472-6483(16)30441-2/pdf

Hope it helps,

Thank you Conolly. I've had a read, but I don't really understand much of it. I don't have any science education at all.

I'll try again tomorrow.

We are born with millions of eggs so in theory we shouldn't run out in a lifetime but by the time we reach puberty we only have around 500,000 left as they are lost in the body. You need to have functioning eggs apparently rather than no eggs left and the ovaries/eggs also stop responding to FSH. I can't link the article at the moment but will try later.
