Blimey, just been informed by a nice lady on here setraline not great if there's breast cancer in your family, which in my case there is,only took my first one today but not taking them again.why did the dr not inform me of the risks, I specifically didn't take hrt because of the same risks.

I've never heard this before - are you sure? As far as I can see, after a very brief look on line, there may be a very very small correlation between anti-depressant use in general and breast cancer, but it's far from proven, and correlation and causation are not the same thing, ie it could be the fact that you're already depressed that puts you slightly more at risk of breast cancer, not use of the AD itself. And no indication that sertraline is particularly bad in this sense. Sorry to whoever told you this, but I think it's irresponsible scaremongering.

Hi jaypo - no-one said this as such! I said "I'm not sure that Sertraline is the best one....". This is not the same as saying there is anything wrong with it, I was trying to tell you that it wasn't the best AD if you can't take HRT due to breast cancer in the family. Please see my post on your thread where I have given you the link to the paper, and an extract which says which ADs are best for women in your position.
racjen - rest assured there has been no irresponsible scare-mongering - just a misinterpetation!
jaypo - try not to worry

Sorry if I picked it up wrong hurdity, when you said have I had a referral re breast cancer & not taking setraline it sounded like you meant hrt & setraline had the same risks. I did do a little research & there ARE actually some risks with certain types of antidepressants ,setraline being one of them.anyway I've phoned dr & she'll get back to me.
Thanks for the hug,boy do I need one 😩

Sorry Hurdity, you're the last person I'd accuse of irresponsible scaremongering! Hadn't seen the rest of the thread x

Why bring up the comment? A GP is unlikely to prescribe an AD with risks and certainly, I have NEVER been told that there are any risks with anti-depressant medications or anti-anxiety medications. I have taken ADs since 1988. I had breast disease in 199? can't remember - but my oncologist never suggested that ADs would be causation.

No, it surprises me too - loads of things are associated, rightly or wrongly, with breast cancer, but ADs are not one I've ever heard mentioned.

Looks like a very weak set of studies to me. You can really screw yourself up with this sort of thing. Just being alive puts you at risk of cancer.
I'm a bit shocked that this has been brought to your attention, to be honest.

Likewise. HRT does not cure everything but ADs can certainly stop people jumping off Clifton Suspension Bridge.
But those who have never taken ADs surely shouldn't make any comments
on a Forum anymore than I would comment on HRT as it is over 25 years since I was prescribed it.
We have to talk to our GPs and hope that the advice given is helpful. Many people have success with Setraline!
