Prozac - Anyone experience been good?
« on: November 08, 2018, 09:52:57 AM »

HI there

I  am off to see my GP tomorrow following on from my hospital appointment a couple of weeks ago (Gyno).

They advised that there is a strong possibility if they start me on HRT my endo will flare up - but if it did I could just stop.  Bit of a Russian roulette!! They are therefore advising I take Prozac for my extreme anxiety and panic attacks.  They said that it should help also with my arthritis/painful joints.

Anyone got any positive they could share before tomorrow :(

Thanks in advance

This drug made me angry  ;D.   Maybe look at the NHS advice on it to see what it is supposed to help other than depression? Let us know how you get on.

Hi there.
I took only two doses of Prozac about 5 years ago....
The outcome was totally horrendous and scary.... I now take citralopam 40mgs daily and live a happy life.

Hi Bradenton69.
I was given Prozac for anxiety, only took it for a week, made me really poorly.
Started in the night, it woke me up, funny feelings that I couldn't understand,
and I knew if I stood up I'd pass out, so just had to keep my head down lower than the rest of my body. I stopped them straight away, it took about a week to come out of my system,
just this horrible feeling of passing out all the time, I had to stay on the settee all week.
Obviously, it was getting better day by day, as the stuff was coming out my system.
It really scared me.  When I told the doc, she just looked at me as if I was making it up!
I'd rather put up and manage my anxiety myself than go back on that stuff.

I know you asked for positive experience's , but I just think that stuff is potent, and there's better ones out there for you......
It may suite you, and great if it does and helps you..
Good luck, xx

Does it help anxiety ....... often drugs do help conditions they weren't initially designed for.

I would say so. First time I took it was when night sweat stopped me getting a full night's sleep for a year. Eventually went into total melt down. The second time was three years ago after my my died was we had my 97 year old Dad to worry about. That time was definitely anxiety.

Having said that my doc says he now generally prescribes Escitalopram as it is much cleaner drug, with less side effects.

Totally agree, it is an individual thing.
And if it helps you, that's great, I was on vanlafexine for a while years ago,
that was for anxiety, looking back, I must have been in peri, but looking after my parents at the time, who were ill,( dad had a triple by-pass, mom had Parkinson's disease,)
I think the peri thing got over looked by me, and thought all the anxiety was caused by the stress of looking after them...
So, I think , if you can't cope with your problems , then go for it, I mean, there's probably loads of people who have had bad reactions from vanlafexine,.....but it might suite you.
If you see what I mean, one persons poison, is another persons cure....as it were...lol

Thanks everyone.  GP was great this morning especially when I had an anxiety attack in the waiting room - total melt down :(

She gave me Prozac and back to see her in 4 weeks.  I am scared but need to do something.  She says if it dosent help she will try other stuff.

Hi Bradenton69

I'm sorry to hear you had an anxiety attack in the waiting room, they knock you for six don't they......they happen to me sometimes when I'm not expecting it. I've got low level anxiety going on now, had it nearly all week, it drives me mad!
It's good that your GP, was good with you, and now you've got something, hopefully it'll knock it into touch. Try not to worry about them, I know it's hard, but they might be just what you need, and you'll be great on them......
Keep us updated on how your getting on.
Best of luck to you, hope you start to feel better soon.

I took fluoxetine (Prozac) for PND about 12 years ago I found it amazing took it on and off for years
I lost a lot of weight on it though and over doing it on alcohol is a definite no no!
Did the trick for me I've not taken it for about the last 3-4 years as I no longer need it
Good luck 😉

Can I ask how long it took for any side effects to kick in??  How long did it take for you to see results?

Prescription sitting on desk at work and anxiety has been shocking all weekend.  My husband is at his wits end.

I only took it for about a week, then the horrible side effects started.
But that's me, you might be fine on it.
I take antihistamines now for my anxiety. They work for me.

But like shadyglade said (I think it was shadyglade) you can't take both at the same time.
It's one or the other.
I know antihistamines don't get rid of it forever (anxiety) like antidepressants would, I have to take them every so often, but I find them better than suffering side effects from ‘proper' medication, if you see what I mean. And if I am left with a bit of tiredness the next day, then I'd rather suffer from that than anything else.

But if you need something for depression, then I'd try the Prozac, because antihistamines aren't going to do anything for that,
Good luck, hope you start to feel better soon.
