No-one talks about it
« on: November 05, 2018, 12:38:02 PM »

Just needed to put my experience down on 'paper'.  My periods are still regular but the emotional effects of the perimenopause are quite pronounced

1.  Brain fog/cognitive decline/terrible memory causing much anxiety and panic attacks at work
2.  Profound loneliness but don't want to be with others
3.  Loss of confidence as a person and particularly as a mother
4.  Deep despair and sadness
5.  No libido whatsoever

I can't imagine coping with the physical discomfort which I know are coming

We talk about 'it' here!  Those physical discomforts may not head your way.  What do you expect to 'cope' with?

 :welcomemm:

The Change.  Does what it says on the tin.  Do read round and make notes.  Maybe decide which symptom you would like to ease first?  Some ladies find that keeping a mood/food/symptom dairy of use [diary?] as well as looking at their over all diet and exercise regimes.

Do be aware of vaginal atrophy.  Several threads here.  As oestrogen levels drop off so the body may become dry: inside and out:! including the vagina.  VA mimics urine infection-type symptoms.  GPs are keen to offer anti-biotic therapies without joining up the dots!

Hello Rose Petal 73. I'm guessing you are 45 ish. I'm 46 and like you still have regular periods (although heavier and worse than before). I've got many of the symptoms you have mentioned. To be honest I'm able to accept my physical symptoms (sore boobs, weight gain, aches and pains, etc) but the emotional ones, many of which you have listed, are what is getting me down every single day. Someone posted yesterday (Hurdity?) on a different thread about not worrying what is coming. Just do your best with what is going on now. The ladies on here have helped me no end. I can't add anything to their wisdom but I can say that you're not on your own xx

It really does need to be talked about more.
I'm only 36. I still have "regular" periods but they are longer now (around 10 days), shorter cycle or farther apart...never know anymore. Sometimes heavy, sometimes not as heavy. How you are feeling is so common. Honestly the physical stuff is easier for me to handle than the emotional stuff these days. I feel a mess all around. I feel very alone because at my age, there really isn't anyone around me going through what I am. Everyone I've mentioned it to is very understanding but nobody else is experiencing it. This forum has been a sanity saver honestly. Still working on getting the doctors to fully listen to me about everything instead of gently brushing me off because of my age. I know I have a long road ahead of me and it does worry me. But I'm going to be going down the meno road whether or not I like it so just trying to find out everything I can and get the best help I can now so hopefully things are easier later.

I can relate to what you're saying.  I finally plucked up the confidence to see a GP this morning and asked to discuss the possibility of going on HRT.  He was very nice and approachable and took blood tests but said I didn't sound peri menopausal as I was having regular periods (they are very light and last two days- so not really normal). I don't have hot flushes or aches but feel very, very tired and have lost my energy and my concentration and memory are poor, I too can suffer from worrying about things and anxiety....Oh and I forgot to tell GP I had a bad memory!!!? I had some night sweats four years ago and trouble sleeping and itchy skin but that all stopped..... maybe you will not suffer from many physical issues- not everyone gets hot flushes? This forum has been great to talk about things as I am still fairly young and I think my friends would be surprised if I mentioned what I was going through- they just see a very smiley person!!  I hope you find someone to support you, Rosepetal.

Wow, I could have written your post but couldn't find the words.

It's really tough to lose all your confidence isn't it... I want to get back to not being like this.

Sally S - another mid-informed GP  >:(

Take a list of symptoms and point out that for you, this is peri-menopause!

Thanks CLKD,  yes, it made me doubt myself as some of the symptoms improved over the past 4 years- but maybe your body learns to adjust?  I guess I'll just have to wait until Friday and see if it is something like thyroid issues - I doubt it, as I don't have typical symptoms.  I'm just hoping the hair shedding soon stops - vicious circle, the more you stress about it, more probably falls out! Might have to start sticking my blonde Cockapoos hair onto my head ;)

Not the whole cockerpoo up there then, now that would be a look  ;)

Occasionally I get period-like pains and my last bleed was in 2002.  Enough to make me think "Oh not after all this time".  The itchy skin comes and goes .........

Ha! Walking around with my Cockapoo sat on my head would certainly take my mind off other things!!  ;D
Eucerin moisturising range is great for itchy skin!  I love the facial moisturisers.

Another uninformed GP. Honestly I despair. They spend five years at medical school, you'd think they could spend a few hours refreshing their knowledge about the menopause.

They also do 6 months rotation in each Speciality.  But I don't expect that menopause is mentioned even when they do Geriatric Medicine  :-\
