Am I post menopausal ?
« on: November 02, 2018, 12:47:49 PM »

I'm 50 yrs old
LH levels 42: FSH levels 72
Have a marina coil for 5 years so no idea of last true period.
Symptoms: trouble regulating body temp at times (but not sweats), joint pain, muscle pain (but not always), flat mood at times(but no mood swings), fatigued feeling like trying to get through sludge, waking up every couple hours (although I do snore), recent elevated cholesterol levels (9!!!!!), but I'm a size 12-14, hair needs more conditioner than normal🙄.
If I am,  how long to symptoms last post menopausal and will I need het?
Find it all a bit confusing.
I work as a nurse working 3 x 13 hour day shifts a week, living with my 2 teenage children.
Im new to all this so thank you.

Sounds as though you could be in post meno but the bloods can very through the peri stage.
If your Mirena is less than 4 years in place then you can simply use some oestrogen as pills, patch or gel to relieve your meno symptoms. If the Mirena is more than 4 years old then you need to get this changed.
The Mirena with seperate oestregon is a great no hassle hrt combo as you won't have to put up with monthly bleeds ( if on a sequi hrt regime) or the possible erratic bleeding that can happen with conti hrts. DG x

As Dancinggirl says your mirina needs changing if it is 5 years old and then add in some oestrogen - transdermal patches or gel mean that that the hrt doesn't go through the stomach or liver ensuring less side effects.

50 is a difficult age to say for sure you are post meno and yes bloods very when peri because they pick up the level at any given point in your natural cycle.  If these types of symptoms are new or have been creeping on then it is likely to be hormonal/menopausal for sure.  What are your periods like?  and if you have never had hrt before then adding oestrogen to a new mirina coil is likely to do the trick.

Hi,  thanks for your responses ladies.
I've had the coil for 5 years with no periods and due to get it removed. Before between the years 2012-13 when I had no contraception in place I did notice a change in the periods,  them becoming erratic and no set routine anymore. The other symptoms have been present over a number of years (about 5+) but put them down to the stresses of changing career, nursing degree, raising kids,  leaving husband, moving house twice etc. However the symptoms seemed to ramp up over past 18 months. Having the coil fitted with no periods have hid any real other evidence other than the recent blood tests. My thyroid is normal, phew. Once i have the coil out I guess it'll be interesting to see what happens periods wise.
I guess I'm unsure if and when I'd need hrt, the patches sound an option.
Thanks

You will need your coil replaced I would say.  Its by far the easiest way to get progesterone and as you have had it before with no ill effects your easiest route to ease your symptoms is to just add oestrogen.  The fact your periods were erratic beforehand and then these other symptoms crept up defo sounds like hormonal to me. It is so easy to blame the stresses and strains of life in general on how rubbish we are feeling but really it is "the change" and all down to our falling hormones.

Tell the doctor how you have been feeling when you get the coil taken out and then maybe you can make plans to start on a small amount of oestrogen when a new coil is put in. All your symptoms sound very common for the menopause.  Starting HRT before 60 has now been shown (forget the scare stuff that has been written about hrt, all been disproven in latest research) to ensure you keep bone density, fight osteoperosis and keeps a healthy heart oh and why have to deal with those other niggly symptoms when you can probably make them go away.  Hope you get sorted.

Thank you for your reply. It sounds good thinking. I've definitely got lots to consider and chat to the doctor about. 😁👍
