Peri Meno Hair Loss
« on: October 21, 2018, 10:36:12 PM »

Ok so since May/June I've noticed that loads of my hair was falling out especially after washing it. Not clumps of it but loads of strands. fast forward to now and it's eased off but still coming out. I've started taking Biotin from Holland And Barrett to see if that works at all. And using strenthing shampoo and conditioner. So the question is really. Can anyone tell me how long this will go on for. As I come to realise that I must be in Peri. Other than aching joints for almost a year and an intense burning bout 4 months ago one time (down there) no other symptoms
TIA

I've had the same problem, I wasn't sure whether it was hormone related or because I had incredibly low ferritin levels - it was completely depleted at one point. I think it might be worth having your levels checked. It needs to be higher than within range, optimal ferritin levels need to be at least 80 to stop hair loss and above 100 to encourage hair growth apparently.

I've struggled to raise my levels, even with iron tablets, it took months, years even, now it is at the highest about 50. I use plantur shampoo which seemed to help reduce the loss and give my hair a chance to grow back a little, then I started HRT for low mood and anxiety, within a few weeks my hair started shedding again. So maybe in my case it was a little bit of both hormones and ferritin. But I think that having your ferritin levels checked is really worth it.

Have you had your hormone and thyroid functions checked?

Hi and thanks.
No I haven't had nothing checked yet. I'm off this week so trying to get in at the doctors. Today was a fail so will try again tomo. I've had nothing set in concrete about Peri but my older friends say it probably is. So the let the games begin.

Hope it goes well and it is something fixable, I know how distressing it is to lose hair.

I went to the doctors as Id had exactly the same for about 3 months. Refused to give me any blood tests but gave me a prescription for psoriasis treatment shampoo. This was after examining my scalp and saying it was healthy!!!

I hope you don't mind if I join in in this conversation. I too have been losing my hair and it's gone very thin on top. My hairdresser commented when cutting it recently that the scalp was sore on one side and red.I must admit it feels sore and itchy. Saw drs this week for hrt review and mentioned he looked and we agreed I try a weeks course of antifungal to see if help. At my last blood test my ferritin was 43 which dr says ok with me taking spatone everyday! Any advice appreciated.

I understand testosterone can be the cause not sure if it's too little or too much possibly both
I don't think doctors test for it by default

I hsve very thick curly red hair and I know I've lost some but I had a lot to lose so only I would notice,

My volume has gone for sure but to anyone else I still look like I've got good hair x

Get your testosterone tested and ASK for the results don't be fobbed off with a

“Everything is fine”

Get the result and do some research as to what the normal range is.
