Author Topic: No estrogen in the tank - is this the reason for hair shedding?  (Read 3146 times)

Traditionally, my hair shedding has been due to low ferritin. But recent levels suggest it's ok.

I'm def shedding more than usual - lots of white bulbs at end of follicles too - do you think this might be because of plummeting estrogen? I've found out that I'm not at all absorbing the gel transdermally.

It's really depressing!

It couldn't have been the culprit in my case as I've always had good oestrogen levels

Ferritin was a bit low but iron supplements didn't help the shedding.  I tried all sorts but testosterone has really improved my hair, not made it like it was but more manageable

There's so many possibilities as to the cause, ie genetics, b12, thyroid, hormones etc

Usually it calms down but is very scary and distressing during its sudden and aggressive phase x

Thanks Annie. It's so horrible. Running hands through hair and tons coming out each time. You convince yourself you're going bald :(

There's a new product on the market called Roots, available from Boots and Superdrug I think that claims to help hair shedding.  I haven't tried it as I'm bad at keeping up regimes.  There's also plantur39 but I was allergic to something in it plus nanogen hair fibres, they're brill for filling in any gaps on the scalp caused by thinning x

Honestly, I think products that make claims that they can stop hair shedding are not being truthful. It's very unusual to be able to stop hair shedding with hair products or over the counter stuff.

My shedding got terrible some years ago when I tried testosterone & increased my HRT from too low a level. I never knew which was the trigger. My shedding hasn't improved in almost 5 years since it started. I'm a couple years into daily minoxidil and I think it has helped with some regrowth, but has not lessened my shedding.

I do think it gets worse for me when I have a giant estrogen drop, fwiw. I am taking a break from testosterone because I am trying to see if anything will lessen the intense shedding but it hasn't let up in years so I'm not hopeful.

Annie I'm so glad the T has helped your hair. I'm afraid it makes my shed worse but I feel so much better on it!

T has helped the condition and manageability of my hair.  I still shed (when I wash my hair I'm pulling it out of the plug hole) and as I'm drying it I can feel the odd hair just falling down my back.  But the initial hair thinning  in 2015 seems (touching lots of wood here) to have reached a level where I'm producing what I'm losing if that makes sense.  I wear clip in hair now so I always look like I have tons which has lessened the stress of it all too x

Just joining in with the frustrations of hair thinning. I've posted about mine before - mine only started last summer and it's exacerbated by having fine hair. I dread washing my hair due to the amount that comes out when I comb it through after.
It's very distressing and I empathise with you all. I've got a darnded itchy scalp at the moment with eczema in scalp which doesn't help! And I have greasy hair roots so I feel a bit of a mess half the time!
What are white bulbs at end of the hair? I'm not familiar with this. My hair that comes out always has a very very slightly thicker bit at the root end.

The white bulb usually indicates it's shed from the scalp as opposed to hair breaking x

Personally, I'd rather my hair break as it'd be easier to rectify.  Losing from the scalp (in my opinion) has to be harder to control.  Mine was from scalp x
