Severe itchy skin!
« on: July 31, 2018, 10:18:59 AM »

I have had itchy skin on and off throughout my perimenopause but it is now every day  :'(.  When I get out of the shower my arms and legs itch so much it makes me want to scream and it is persistent throughout the day as well now but the severity is worse first thing! I also sometimes get in on my neck as well but not as bad as my limbs!  I started HRT 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping that'll help but has anyone else got this and do I just persevere or go back to the doctors?  Its driving me insane  :-\

Sorry to hear what you are going through I think I would make a doctor's appointment why live with it if there's something that can be done.  My daughter and I have eczema but control it with a cream that does the trick apparently the doctor says its linked to allergies. Hope you can get it sorted soon it sounds so uncomfortable for you.

Lack of oestrogen can cause itchy skin.  For me it was my insteps, as soon as socks were off at night they began to itch.  Being in the bath helped.  But I would wake in the night with one heel scratching the ppt. instep  :-\

DH had itchy skin down his legs and now applies Nivea every night.  Works for him.  I use a lavender hand cream from Heacham which works for me.

I moisturise everyday which helps a bit but I might try the shower head, that sounds a great idea!  Thank you x :-*

I would stop using any perfumed products for a few weeks and see if that makes a difference. You could try the  Aveeno products for example. To prevent eczema I use Doublebase Emollient Gel Wash in the shower and apply Doublebase Gel afterwards, as that's what works best for me.

I rarely use any soap on my face.  My shower rinses off any suds but I usually bath and have had no problems.  Check that your laundry is thoroughly washed on at least a 40d wash any lower doesn't get the soap out! and sheets/towels should go through at 60 or higher.  If your laundry smells of conditioner it's because your rinse cycle isn't a) hot enough or b) long enough.

My itching has 95% gone with HRT, it was awful my shins would almost bleed from scratching .

It's called “ formication “ (sp) and pretty common part of menopause.

Thanks for all the advice but after trying the water filter shower head for the last 2 days with no relief which resulted in me having a breakdown this morning in floods of tears and scratching my arms and legs with a bristle brush till it hurt, I think I will just have to wait for the HRT to kick in!  I think taking antihistamine provides a bit of relief so I will just take that every day as well.   :'(

Does your skin itch if you don't bathe/shower? Try just having a strip wash for a couple of days, armpits, feet, lady bits and if you're ok at least you will know it's the water making it worse. I wash in cetraben for my atrophy but this can be used to wash all over and protects from the water especially hard water which I find is harsher. Also when I tried Femoston Conti I would itch after taking it for hours (never had itching before) but was ok when changed to Femseven so the progesterone didn't suit.

It itches worse when I get out of the shower but it does itch throughout the day just not with the same intensity. I've only got the itching since I've become perimenopausal, I never had it before.  I'm on Femoston but only been taking it for 2 weeks so will wait and see if it improves but the antihistamine seem to provide some relief.

Some of my itching feels like it's beneath the skin layer - if that makes sense?  Also, when I have a cold, I get itching under my rib cage.  Deeply.  Was told as a child that it was 'imagination'  >:( and I can't get under the ribs to get at the itch  >:( :(.  It goes once the Germ moves on.

Use a good hand cream, Himself has found Nivea really good for his legs and slathered some on my back which was itching last night.  Use it often.

Hi There
I just saw this post and wanted to say that my sister (52yrs and 2 yrs post) suddenly developed the most awful itching overnight and was demented it was so bad. Lots of creams etc from the doctor but didn't really make it go away. She then discovered that there was a link between here itching and eating GLUTEN ?? She has never had a problem with gluten before in her life but if she eats some now by accident then the itching flares up.
There seems to be no logic to this Menopause and the hormonal chaos that our body is going through seems to manifest itself in so many different ways.
I hope this might help.
