Bad acid reflux and difficulty swallowing
« on: July 15, 2018, 10:06:50 AM »

Hi again,
So I'm back with another query. My last update was having to come off birth control due to having chronic hives from it. So, I'm just over 2 months (I think) off birth control and 2 weeks ago I developed a very sore throat and the uvula at the ba k of my throat got swollen. I went to gp who thought it was viral, but I mentioned I was having some reflux that day also so he perscribed Gertac for reflux, anti histamine because my nasal passage was blocked up, sinus spray, strepsil throat spray and anti biotics just in case it was bacterial.
So its been 2 weeks now and my throat and acid reflux is not better. I've been hoarse on and off which I mentioned at app and he said either reflux and viral infection could cause that.
I really thought the reflux tablets would have kicked in by now but they dont seem to have had any effect. Sometimes I struggle to breath as my nose drys up and my throat is raw and feels tight.
I haven't gone back on any hormones since as I just don't know what to try. I do have anxiety but I've been doing great with regards to that as I started a program and its been very helpful.
I just feel like once I overcome one issue it gets replaced by another. I might also mention that my wisdom have been causing me trouble as my bottome 2 are trying to erupt properly and have been for a few years....I am on a waiting list to be seen.....can wisdom teeth affect the throat or sinuses??
To add to everything, I think I have developed tennis elbow in my left arm. Well my sister tells me thats what it is. I cant lean on my elbow as its too painful. I had it years ago briefly but I never knew what it was.
I had blood tests done at gp office also and I ring tomorrow to get the results..I'm sure they will say I'm fine as they usually come back normal.
Just this pain in throat is effecting my appetite too as I find it gets dryer after eating food.
Anybody experience anything similar? I do have a small hiatus hernia also which i had an endoscopy for 2 years ago. I also had barrium swallow test then which showed no acid reflux but I feel acid rsing into my mouth and I have a horrible taste in my mouth as well.
Thanks ladies for any advice.   :)

As oestrogen levels drop the muscles may become lax which includes the gut area, ladies are prone to hiatus hernia at this time of Life.  The valve that stops food coming back 'up' gets loose, allowing reflux ....... I have found that Rennies, 2/3 chewed as soon as symptoms begin, solve it for me.  Also not eating/drinking too close to going to bed as when I lay down to sleep, reflux begins  >:(.  I have to sleep upright sometimes.

Maybe look at your diet overall to see what foods might trigger reflux?  Sometimes we need to cut out things that we like as they can aggravate symptoms.

Could Sleeping with Gob Wide Open make the whole mouth dry which may account for the soreness deep in the throat?  Sipping plenty of cool liquids in the day might help.  Raising the head slightly at night could help too.

Tennis elbow is above the joint, golfers underneath in the fatty bit.  Again, apparently could be caused by laxity of muscles due to a drop of oestrogen.  Gentle use until the pain eases, maybe take a pain relief tablet regularly for 3-5 days or ask a Pharmacist for advice on the various 'rubs' available?

Thank you CKLD, all good information there. Yes I believe I do sleep with my mouth wide open and always have done to my knowledge. I've had the hiatus hernia a long time but only troubking me in recent years. I havent tried rennie but I will give them a go. I've tried gaviscon tablets, liquid and gerta  so far. Will also look at my diet. I'm sure there is room for improvement there.
Perhaps it is golfers elbow...... either way hurts but I will get the rubs etc. Thank you

Is the painful area on the top of the arm i.e. on the elbow joint on the outer side, or underneath i.e. where the crease line is when it is bent?  I could pin point it 4 U - a little press and you would jump  :o there is no doubt which it might be depending on where the tender point is situated.

Some get on OK with Gaviscon .......... but it shouldn't be taken for long periods of time.  It supposedly lines the digestive tract which can ease reflux.  For me it's like burning from mid-sternum deep inside all the way to the throat and causes a lot of saliva to form  :-\.  One might suggest swallowing something soothing within an hour of eating.

Hello dear,

CLKD has given you great advice.
Just want to ask you if you had tried Gaviscon Advance, which is better than Gaviscon?

I have been feeling pain in my right elbow but as much as my GP says this is a fibromyalgia symptom I just refuse to accept that's all down to fibro or menopause. These conditions surely aggravate every single problem and I think that we spend too much time on computer, tablets, phones and technology is taking its toll. Both fibromyalgia and menopause affect our central nervous system and I suspect the pain response is heightened enormously. That's my own experience.

Oh, and maybe your sore throat could also be caused by drinking cold beverages during this unusually hot Summer.

Hope you feel better soon.

Have you ever been tested for underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism) as they are all symptoms of that and as it is also hormone related, a lot of doctors think it is all menopausal.  Just an idea x

Sciatic nerve, golfers and tennis elbow are characteristic in that when a certain area on the body is poked, the suffered jumps. High!

I have a problem .......... noticed in the last 17-18 months.

It happens when we have boiled rice with curry.  It sticks.   :-\.  I have to dash for a drink.  The 1st time it happened I had to lean over the loo as rice felt stuck.  After a slow drink symptoms eased and I could finish my meal.  It happened again tonight ....... again with curry.  Once I've had the drink it's OK ......

I know for years Mum has had a glass of water at meal times.  Otherwise she starts to cough.  Anyone?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your symptoms but most of us on the forum have had a number of things. I have been blasted with symptoms mainly this year (nearly 49y, late peri), and funny enough, I do seem to have something like tennis elbow in my left arm as well. Never had this in my life before and I am usually doing some weights training and running (whenever symptoms allow). This whole peri stuff really is crazy! I found that my "tennis elbow" is slowly getting better funny enough if I keep moving it regularly during the day, and strength training seems to help but with slightly ligher weights at the moment. Good luck, Anna

I suffer with this quite badly. Was so distressed with it about two years ago I had it investigated with endoscopy etc.
It can be awful - GERD, that is - and when I have it (always left side) my neck, throat, ear, etc are bad for days.
Look at the Dr Koufman diet. Interesting reading and lots of tips.
Hope you get some relief soon xx
