Hair loss and feeling depressed
« on: June 11, 2018, 10:21:30 AM »

Hi, I am 41 and my hair has been thinning on and off since I stopped the pill 7 years ago. In that time I have had two children and been on the pill again for 18 months after having my first son 5 years ago. Since my youngest son was born 2 years and 3 months ago my periods have gradually become more irregular and my hair is falling out again. I lost some on the centre parting after he was born which has since grown back but it's very short at the temples and at the back in the middle and doesn't seem to grow more than 2 or 3 inches. It's also very very dry and no amount of conditioner or oils seem to help. In an attempt to improve it I had it cut just over 7 months ago but the person cut too much off and layered it and made it worse and it now looks very thin at the bottom at the back with bits missing. It's really affecting my confidence and I avoid going out as much as possible. I'm already having mood swings but it's making me really depressed. I've been to the dr's, seen an endocrinologist and a Dr who apparently specialises in hair but have just been told that as my hormones are in normal range there's nothing they can do. One Dr prescribed me loestrin pill but I'm reluctant to take it because my hair will fall out again when I stop taking it and the pill messed up my skin before. I know it's menopause. My first blood test came back with my FSH level at 60 but because it's gone back down in the last few tests the dr's won't help me. I don't want to use menoxidil. I started maca 4 months ago and just started vitex so hopefully they'll help but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar and if they found something that helped. I'm desperate and feel like everyone has given up on me. I keep crying all of the time and my children know something's wrong.

Hi Sharon,
 :welcomemm:

This is a common problem in menopause and lots of ladies on here have experienced it so some of them will hopefully reply. In the meantime, make sure you are on the main page and type 'hair loss' into the search engine and you will see all the threads about it.

Here is one for you:

Hi Sharon and welcome to the forum.Im an ex hairdresser so best advice I can give you is nourish your scalp.
Get some raw cold pressed organic coconut oil ( Holland and Barrat)and warm it up then massage through your hair and scalp wrap in a warm towel and leave for around ten mins then rinse off.
(As with everything new do a patch test on crease of arm first, say day before to ensure no skin reactions but it's not usual to react )
Do this a couple of times a week and within a month I'd say you'll start to feel the benefit.also try comb your hair not brush for a wee while it's kinder to the hair.lets know how you get on and good luck it's worth a try xx

Hi Sharon, I do sympathise with you and you sound like you do need some help. Have you any other menopause symptoms as it does sound like you should if you can trial hrt? Depression and anxiety can become a vicious circle but hrt can help with that also. The oestrogen component may well help your hair to thicken and grow a bit. You have the right to go to your GP and ask for hrt if peri or post menopausal.
Read up on the treatments/symptoms etc up the top of the forum page and go and see your gp if you can.
My hair started thinning a little pre hrt then got thicker on femoston and I've noticed it was thinning a bit on Mirena but I've started taking biotin 2000iug to see if that helps also. It seems to have stopped falling out as much when I shower etc.
Keep us posted what you decide but do keep talking to us anyway, you don't want to be on your own when you're feeling like this and there's lots of lovely ladies on here to help you with support xx

Hi Sharon, this is one of my greatest fears. I've always loved my hair. It was thick and wavy but as I've got older it's changed and I'm terrified that it's thinning out. I know it's not the same and my hair really is my crowning glory.

I now take Folic Acid everyday and Biotin too. Fingers crossed these will help. I also need to go back to my doctor to discuss the HRT that I was too frightened to take because a side effect is possible hair loss as it was Oestrogen patches. But it seems that Oestrogen may actually help. As the other ladies have said, go back and try to get on the HRT. Try another doctor and stress to them how depressed you are. Good luck Sharon, I hope you can get this sorted xx.

So much can play a part in hair thinning/loss

Genetic
Low ferritin
Thyroid
Vit b12
Other vitamins
Auto immune
Hormonal ......

God the list is endless, ask gp for blood tests to rule out any obvious reason

Good luck, it really is nasty at a time when we need all the help we can get to feel better about ourselves x
