Changing symptoms during peri menopause
« on: May 20, 2018, 05:54:56 PM »

Hi All,

I have been having some severe peri menopause symptoms in the last few months (current age 48), had a period mid-Jan 2018, then nothing and in the build up to next period at the end of April I had a range of for my experience severe symptoms mostly in March and April. I used to get some hot flushes, sweats at night, sleep issues, blood pressure going off the rails, headaches etc. and a general feeling most days and also at night of feeling horrible with hormones completely unbalanced. I also had a very oily face over the last year in particular.
I am not too sure what to expect next (nobody is probably) but my face has recently turned really dry, and gets irritated by sun screen (which I need to use whilst running). I had no more sweats or hot flushes for some weeks now, and after a really bad few weeks of insomnia I am now sleeping better and feel almost "normal".

I have two questions:

- Has anyone with periods really far apart (3 -4 months or more) noticed that their symtoms have only been bad in the run up to the next period, or, have things been pretty awful all the way (or is this dependent on person)?
- Sun screen issue is giving me a headache for face in particular: I am using P20 or another Factor 50 non oily spray which is sweat resistant for running. This used to work fine until this year and in the last few weeks I have been getting red blotches afterwards on my face no matter which sun screen I used. I also use a visor but my face may get irritated by sweat as well sun screen and get blotchy. Has anyone advice of what worked for them?

Many thanks and all the best to everyone, Anna

Hi and welcome to MM
What you are experiencing is all really normal for peri menopause.
When oestrogen levels fluctuate and fall then this will make meno symptoms come and go. Oestrogen deficiency causes the skin and mucus membranes to dry out, muscle strength is lost and joints often ache.
Perhaps try a hyper allergic sunscreen? I find the Clinique one very good.
HRT would probably really help you so write down all your symptoms and questions and print off the information on the various peri menopause treatments under TREATMENTS on this site and discuss this with your GP. DG x

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I will give Clinique brand a try as well for a sunscreen, one just has to see what works. Anna

Welcome Anna!
I can't comment on the menopause side of things as it's all rather new to me. Dancinggirl is a great source of information. So too are a lot of the other ladies who respond to posts/questions.
I can comment on sunscreen. I too use Clinique. I use it everyday as the Australian climate can be very harsh on your skin. It's well worth the investment. Oh another I have used is Dermalogica.

Hi All,

Thanks all for your suggestions. I am ok with P20 and other chemically based sun screen but my face does no longer be able to handle both sweating whilst running plus such sun screens. But I have now tried another sun screen for face, which is often used by runners and cyclists and this does seem to work: Tingerlaat Factor 50+ for face. There are also physical sun screens based on zinc oxide and I have ordered "Badger" sport sun screen. This may work also whilst running. Anna

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I was really surprised that symptoms can get this bad and hardly anyone mentions this ever. Luckily, my symptoms seem to have become more moderate but if things get a lot worse I will consider HRT.

All the best, Anna
