These scans are very, very routine - I would be extremely surprised if they find anything sinister at all.  At most they might find a fibroid which is extremely common in peri menopause and usually nothing to worry about. Hopefully they will do biopsies to further measure you.  Good luck. DG x

How did you get on?

What's the worst that could happen?  Scans give us the opportunity to discuss our worries and if disease is caught early, then treatment can be offered.

I have to have them very frequently because I am progesterone intolerant and only take a very small amount of progesterone.  My gynaecologist does the scans herself so we can talk through things at the time - she gives me a printout at the end.  If there was anything serious they would have told you on the spot.

Hi Herbie, try not to worry.
Erratic bleeding is terribly common in the perimenopause. Fibroids have been mentioned and endometrial polyps commonly cause spotting mid cycle too.
They commonly do an internal scan if that suits you as well as hysteroscopy (camera similar to the ultrasound probe)to check the endometrial lining but it very rarely throws up anything nasty. Hormones are going mad at this time, which can cause the bleeding if its not one of the other benign causes.
Let us know how you get on.

Do you get the result at the time of the appt.?

Hi all,
Went for scan found fibroid, admenomyosis, both benign, but my endometrial lining was slightly thickened, it was 13 mm, I'm on day 19, lady doing the scan didn't seem worried, however spoke to my dr, and she has fast track referred me to a Gyno, so I'm absolutely petrified I haven stopped crying , I've called in sick today, I'm so so scared I really don't know how I'm going to cope, dr said she is almost sure it's not cancer but why would you fast track someone, I've read that 13 mm is within normal range, and I know someone who had thickened lining, dr told her it was her age, she's the same age as me, I really don't know what to do, I don't have any risk factors of cancer but I'm convinced it is,please someone if you have any reassuring advice, I would appreciate it xxxxx

Are you on HRT or are you peri meno? Try not to worry, the adenomyosis can also cause spotting.

Stop worrying?  The lady doing the scan didn't seem concerned.  Your GP is trying to put your mind at rest and once you've had the appt., you can move forwards to the next stage of sorting out treatment if necessary.

What's the worst that can happen?  Unfortunately, worry comes with menopause ........  Why aren't you convinced?

Worries like this are really common.  Probably more than is ever reported.  Because we reach an age when people begin being diagnosed with nasties.  However, there is a School of Thought that all these NHS offered tests at specific ages is making the well, sick!

We may be juggling home, work, children, aging parents at a time when we should be focussing on our own health.  So background niggles become huge.  You are lucky that you can be fast tracked because in some areas, despite Government Guidelines, the Waiting Lists for various specialities are too long for any tracking.

What is the worst that you could be diagnosed with?  In the 1990s I had treatment 4 breast disease, my biggest worry was that panic attacks would not allow me to go for daily radiation treatment but in fact, adrenaline saw me through.  It was after I had been discharged that the lack of routine was problematic.  OK now!

Hi there Herbie. I was in a similar position to you this time last year. An ultrasound revealed adenomyosis, small fibroids and a thickened lining. Mine was 18 mm!

My consultant explained that adenomyosis can cause the lining to be thick in places. It doesn't necessarily mean anything sinister.

I was offered an hysteroscopy (sp) to buy some time. Or I could've had an ablation with a Mirena coil fitted. Or a course of strong progesterone to thin the lining.

Because tiny pockets of endometriosis were found too, I opted for a total hysterectomy which was the best choice for me.

Please try not to worry, a thickened lining will cause heavy bleeding or spotting but it doesn't have to be anything sinister.

I send you my very best wishes xxx

I reassured myself by saying that I was in the system, being looked after. It's better that these things are detected early and dealt with. So many different treatments out there for this type of thing  :)
