External bleeding after sex.......
« on: April 03, 2018, 03:43:17 PM »

For a while I've noticed now & again after sex that there's a little blood when I wipe (sometimes literally just a dot), I'm pretty sure it's not coming from inside so it's therefore external. I'm just wondering if this is a peri thing?

I recently had a smear and the nurse asked if I had irregular bleeding so I told her about the bleeding and said I thought it was external and she wasnt concerned at all. In fact that was the end of the conversation! The smear test didn't get tested in the end, some kind of mix up with when I was due one, it turned out it's not until next year so they sent it back untested!

They might have well have done it, rather than wasting time/energy/postage!

Do you have a small tear down there, I think that you would feel it.  It may be internal, i.e. slightly inside.  Does your partner have blood?

Other times I've felt a bit sore like there's a small tear but not really this time. There was slightly more blood this time but not until this afternoon (had sex this morning), but still only a smear on the tissue. No, he didn't have any blood on him and when I wiped straight after there was only the very minutest dot. I'm not particularly worried, just wondered if it's part & parcel of peri! And yes I know, can't believe they sent the smear test back untested! They had contacted me saying I was 2yrs overdue then sent it back saying I'm a year early 😏!

Typical NHS.  One half don't know what the other should be doing  ::).

Is the blood bright red, in which case it is fresh and new.  You may have a small tear ........ perhaps put some Savlon on the area to ease any small splits B4 they become painful!

As a bit of a meander I had a polyp up there which bled on contact for years.  Surgeon wanted to remove it but I wasn't keen and it disappeared at peri .......

KAH - any bleeding after sex should ALWAYS be investigated.  Do go to the doctor not the nurse. You may need to have another smear. It's probably absolutely fine and could just be a tear or something as you say but should be looked into (happened to me and still not quite sure of the reason but I have a cervical ectropion so they thought it could be that). Whereabouts in menopause are you re periods etc? Are you using vaginal oestrogen at all for VA?

I think I've been in peri for at least 3 or 4 years but still have regular periods. My GP won't talk about anything menopause related until my periods have stopped so I don't take anything. I'm not sure what VA is 😳!
The reason I think it's external is because it usually happens if we've not had sex for a while and it can be a little sore/painful during and after sex. It's always bright red blood and it's only when I wipe and looks on the tissue like it would if you had a cut in your finger and had wiped it (hope that makes sense!), rather than spotting. I have had a couple of 'splits' in the skin down there too, although not for a while (fingers crossed 🤞🏻!!)

VA is Vaginal Atrophy often called Vaginal Dryness which is really a misnomer as your vagina can still feel quite lubricated but the skin is thin and this can lead to damage during intercourse etc. https://patient.info/health/menopause-hrt/vaginal-dryness-atrophic-vaginitis  Changes begin long before you are post  menopausal and your doc is wrong not to talk about anything menopause related until after your periods have stopped - you often need topical oestrogen before then.
