Heart flips
« on: April 01, 2018, 08:17:26 PM »

Hi Ladies I'm aged 64 and 5 years post menopausal and still getting hot flushes and nightsweats -  but the worst thing is heart flips and occasional palpitations. In the past I've been checked out and had the 24hr monitor and told everything was fine. They're not always there but when they come they put the wind up me. Tried magnesium spray and tablets and currently taking Red Clover which I've been on for two weeks but doesn't seem to be doing anything. All the reviews I read said they're flushes went within a few days to a week - why doesn't any of these herbal tablets work for me? I've spent a small fortune on it all. Would be interested in hearing of anyone else gets the heart flips/palpitations.😕

Hi and welcome to MM Carol Lister

WE are all different and what works for one person won't work for another.  I am 62 and stopped HRT nearly 2 years ago.  I have tried all sorts of herbal and alternative remedies with no real benefit I'm afraid. You'd be better saving the money and having a relaxing massage or taking a holiday.
I believe consuming more isoflavines/phytoestrogens in the diet can help some women but the benefits will vary. I actually started Red clover (high dose) to try to support my heart and bones as there is a bit of evidence that it can help - I have soya milk with my cereal each morning as well and my flushes do seem slightly better but I still get
get palpitations and surges through my body quite a bit - they don't seem to get any better as time goes on. Some women find that many meno symptoms never do really subside.
Mindfulness is my best support for meno symptoms - it takes time to learn how to do it adn one has to be disciplined but it can help when palpitations, surges etc occur.  DG x

Did you ever take HRT? Really this is the only thing that is guaranteed to eliminate flushes and sweats (other than some anti-depressants - but these are not indicated for menopausal symptoms unless you are unable/not recommended to take HRT) but if you've never taken it and are a long time since menopause (more than 10 years since menopause or last HRT) then it can be more tricky although not out of the question. There are women on here in their 60's who have started HRT for the first time. However mental strategies as Dancinggirl suggests may help you to cope and will stand you in good stead generally!

Hi Hurdity, I tried HRT for the first time last year and it did put the flushes away but gave me insomnia and extreme anxiety. I also read that going on HRT for the first time when over sixty heightens your risk of some health issues so I thought - I might just be swapping one set of ailments for another.
I wish I had gone on it years ago. My sister who is 68 years has been on HRT (eostrogen only) for 25 years after she had a hysterectomy and she swears by it. I still have everything in tact and therefore needed a combined HRT which can be a bit more difficult to get one that suits although not impossible.
At the moment I have a big jar of red clover, starflower oil capsules and magnesium to plough my way through...so far they have made no difference to my symptoms but maybe it will take time. I'm also taking milkthistle to cleanse my liver -  when I had a blood test taken recently I was told my liver had a high reading.  My thinking is if my liver is congested then I might have a build up of hormones which won't help.

Sometimes I just need to come onto the forum for reassurance when the palps and anxiety have been bad. 😕

Thanks for replying to my post.😉 x
