43 and getting night sweats
« on: March 30, 2018, 09:33:20 PM »

I'm 43 and recently started suffering night sweats.   Couple of heavy sporadic ones over a couple of weeks and now every night.  Is this normal ?

I'm still on regular monthly cycles, the only other thing I've suffered is migraines since 38.

Noticed the sweats on chest and lower back area mainly .

Is this a sign I will hit menopause earlier than 50? My mum and aunty had theirs at 50.

Also, should I go docs ?

Hi, I'm also 43 and have had night sweats on and off for about 8 months. Wondered what was happening initially and thought had a bug. But then I noticed they happened before my period most months. I started with other symptoms about 12-18 months ago so the night sweats are just one in a long line.
I've also started getting hot flushes in the daytime and I constantly feel warmer.
I'd log when they're happening and see if there's a pattern- could be when the different hormones are peaking/dropping.
Good luck.

My first symptom was night sweats just as you described night after night, there's no telling how long this phase will last. You're probably early on in perimenopause if you're still regular. My sweats started 3 years ago and I'm still peri.
Do they bother you? Might be worth chatting to your GP, hopefully a good one, and even if don't want hrt now you might later. Migraines don't rule hrt out, just a matter of finding the most appropriate type.

Hi Roz1974

 :welcomemm:

Yes I agree it's worth going to the doctor if only to check out other possible causes for your sweats - as you still have a regular cycle. Strictly speaking if your cycle is regualr then you are in the Late Reproductive Stage ( ie ovaries still working properly) but hormones start to go awry at this point and it gets harder for a follice to develop into an egg. You may well have raised FSH. Due to your age if the doc has ruled out other causes and the sweats are nothering you, then s/he could order a couple of blood tests (first on approx Day 3 of cycle and second 4-6 weeks later). If your FSH is raised or if there is no other explanation for your sweats - and they are bothering you, you could consider HRT or maybe the combined Pill. There are a couple of the latter that contain estradiol - the same oestrogen as in HRT. Some sort of pill would help to even ot any hormonal surges and hopefully deal with your symptoms

Hi Roz,

I'm also 43 and started with night sweats maybe 3 years ago but it didn't occur to me it could be menopause related until my periods suddenly stopped for a while (I put this down to the mini pill) then came back heavy and sporadic. The doctor did blood tests and the showed I was heading that way so, after various other tests and seeing a specialist, they finally put me on HRT. I've been on it 3 months now and it's a case of finding one that suits, I'm still in that trial period at the moment. I'm also a migraine sufferer and as I've had migraine with aura I can't have the combined pill any more. I'd definitely recommend giving HRT a go as night sweats and disturbed sleep is really tough when you have to try and function all day on little sleep.

I'm 44 and night sweats were also my first symptom of peri, that was 3 or 4 years ago. Now I have a whole host of other symptoms but at that time it was just the night sweats and unexplained bruising all over my legs. I'm still having regular periods all these years later, haven't gone down the HRT route as my docs won't discuss it with me until my periods stop x

Thanks for replies.

The night sweats have eased off the last few nights.
Interesting to read about the unexplained bruising on legs as I had that last year.

I've also got a red patch on my gum that has blistered twice, trying to get someone to have a look at NHS hospital but it's proving hard work getting an appointment.

Migraines are the pits though.   I never suffered from any headaches and then get migraines at 38  :'(
