Vitamin D defincently
« on: March 14, 2018, 03:09:58 PM »

Hi
Just wondering if anyone else is Vit D deficient and how they got on with taking supplements. Just found out yesterday I'm low on vit D from blood test at dr and the dr gave me high dose tablet to take 1 a week for 6 weeks then be reacessed .Well as you may know Ive been on her lately as been really struggling with menopause and hrt and having M.e as well. I took the tablet last night and I've felt awful since only describe as spaced out and flu like and tiredness you can't keep your eyes open and weird feeling. Be interested to know if anyone else been the same, I was hoping the opposite!

I think it depends on the strength as I was OK on mine but my friend had stronger ones and every time she took one, she got a really bad headache.

Yep.  Both Mum and I had similar symptoms.  We were very tired; I would do 20 mins. weeding then have to sit absolutely still for 2 hours   :-\. I had VitD supplement from the GP "Fultimum-D" Capsules.  After a couple of weeks I felt better.

Hi  :)

I went from 29 nmol/L to 103 nmol/L in 7 weeks following a high Vitamin D dose Protocol. I felt horrendous for the first couple of weeks with excruciating joint/bone and muscle pain (due to remineralisation of bones) but then things started getting better. Now some symptoms completely settled, others improved. My aim is to get to an optimal level of 125-200 nmol/L- some doctors feel 100 nmol/L is sufficient  :D

From my research daily dosing is better than weekly and D3 needed not D2. High doses need cofactors to aid absorption and prevent other issues.
 Keep going  :foryou:

That reminds me, I had various joint pains - like a sudden needle into the area.  That's gone except for the left arm, if I reach out in a certain direction it HURTS!

I need to add that my levels were found to be low at a blood test

Hi salad
My level is 39 and have taken 1 tablet of 50000 of colecalciferol got to take 5 more over next 5 weeks did you have to do the same. The dr said it's to raise the levels quickly when you finish this do you have to take a low dose permanently or just winter? Hope you don't mind me asking what symptoms did it make better for you ?Hope you don't mind me asking as this is all new to me. Thank you 🌞

The Vitamin D level was requested by the Menopause Specialist as I had such a long list of symptoms they didn't think they were all menopause related.
Including : bleeding gums, tinnitus, hair loss, headaches, sweats, muggy head, concentration problems, sleep issues, joint/bone pain, aching muscles, tendonitis, dizziness, palpitations and fatigue. I felt ill.
Now I'm feeling well, still have tinnitus, joint/muscle aches but they are less, a couple of episodes of dizziness and palpitations but not as frequent. So feel more positive  :)
My GP gave me 3200 iu D3 capsules, one a day for 3 months. BUT I researched a high dose protocol - 10 000 iu D3 daily plus 300-900mg Magnesium (helps absorption and D3 depletes Magnesium) and 5 mg Vitamin K2 (keeps Calcium in bones and not circulating in blood). I made the decision to follow it with excellent results. I needed to get my level up quickly as I was being reviewed at the Menopause Clinic and wanted to see what symptoms were left.

My plan is to continue taking D3 but I will reduce the daily dose. I'm currently on 8 000 iu but will go down to 5 000 iu if my blood level is up and my symptoms go.
It surprising how unwell low Vit D can make you feel! Hope you feel better soon  :)

Thank you for your reply's I appreciate it is all new to me. I've had chat we my Gp and decided to take a low dose every day instead of 1 mega dose a week as I've felt terrible since the large dose he says 1000 a day. Having M.e doesn't help as part of the condition includes not tolerating things at the level normal people do. I don't eat dairy as I'm intolerant to it so wonder if I should be taking calcium as well but I've read mixed opinions!

Obviously you know what is best for you and you should do what you prefer   :)
- my understanding from my GP is that 1000 iu is a maintenance dose so will not raise the level, but daily dosing is better.
Interestingly, if my symptoms don't settle with addressing my deficiency and with having my Oestrogen level stable then my next step is a referral to a CFS/ME specialist.

Did they check your calcium level when you had your blood tested?

I was severely deficient last year and did hours of research I seem to recall reading it's not advisable to take calcium when taking D but I can't remember why, I found the vitamin d council site really useful, it may even be there I read I it so maybe a good place to start research?

As Salad mentioned magnesium and vitamin K2 MK7 are also important when taking D3, there's a section on the d councils site regarding it.

I hope you feel better soon it took months and months for the awful symptoms to go in particular the bone pain. I took 5000iu daily and got retested regularly.

glad to hear your on the mend Salad xx

They didn't check my Calicum levels and when I spoke to my GP today he won't test it or do another Vit D as I'm not taking the mega doses they prescribed🤔 I'm going to start low and gradually build up and see how it goes.

I have ME as well and my levels went up on 1000iu for 2-3 months from 27 to 101 three years ago. I think quite modest doses can raise levels- at least that was my experience. I let it slip and not taking any supplements I have just found out my levels are at rock bottom again so back on 1000 iu together with K2 this time.

I have been using a 3000iu spray over winter but find I need to take magnesium from time to time as the aches come back.

I have been taking 25ug/1000 daily since I found my levels were very low 4 years ago.  I have never been retested by the doctor, but everytime I stop taking it, aches come back within 2 weeks.  I make an effort to get a bit of sun too. Your shadow should be shorter than you for the angle of the sun to be optimum, as a rule of thumb.

My best year was after spending a week in Thailand in March.  They know how to do sun there.  8)
