If your GP surgery and nurse will not prescribe you hrt and you want to try it, what is your best course of action?

What I can think of:

1. Change doctor
2. Ask for a referral to a menopause clinic
3. Try referring yourself to a private gynae who does menopause.

I'd suggest all of the above lol!  Of course when you get your mits on the stuff your next challenge is to find a treatment  that actually works. Fortunately the good ladies of the forum can help you every step of the way.

Why won't your GP give you HRT?

It's not for me    I am happy on Femoston 2/10 atm, (but not looking forward to being told to stop after 5 years  )

I was talking to a friend about it.  We were wondering about what you do when you have an intransigent surgery that is not up to date with the current guidelines, so the question is totally hypothetical.

We were wondering what the options were, and what was the best way to go about it.  I was hoping it would help others reading this forum who might be in the same boat (and that it will help us in the future).

How long is your friend prepared to wait and how is she placed financially?  If she is prepared to wait then ask for an appointment at the nearest menopause clinic but if she wants treatment immediately, it would be better to find a private menopause specialist. 

If she has a history of progesterone intolerance (she may or may not know this) then again, the private route would be better because she would be offered a tailor made regime.

I am beginning to think the best route is just to travel and pay for a private consultant.  I am not sure how this works to tie in  with the GP though, which is probably my biggest dilemma.  I am looking around to consultants I could go to if I have to give up hrt next year.  Since the doctors at the surgery are not interested, I am not confident in asking them for a referral.

I am beginning to think that this is probably the best route for the friend who has not been given the opportunity to try hrt at all.  They keep faffing around with other tests and stuff and not getting there and she is post meno now.

Neither of us are special cases, we just want hrt for ordinary reasons, and to be able to discuss our needs with someone who knows what's what.  All we have is a prescribing nurse who gets muddled and is snowed under with triaging at the moment.

I gave up trying to have an intellegant conversation with last 2 or 3 gps even when armed with an email from dr currie the gp still spouted rubbish about not having Oestrogel pump on his computer so he couldn't prescribe then told me to stop the oestriol cream for VA as Id end up with too much oestrogen in my body,even dr currie was gobsmacked so I changed gps then last week went to a private consultant who also works for the nhs so could refer me for further tests on the nhs so basically what he did was give me a private prescription for the correct meno treatment I needed until his letter can get to the gp and he has asked the gp to refer me for a dexa scan and advised him of his findings during the consultation.ive just saved my gps practice a lot of time and money and guessing games as far as I'm concerned by self referring to a meno consultant so if that's the situation you find yourself in then I'd say do the same go private you'll not regret it.good luck x
