Palpitations and anxiety
« on: January 07, 2018, 06:04:51 PM »

I keep getting bad palpitations and the more anxious I get the worst they become, my imagination keeps running away with me thinking I'm having a heart attack. I am now 55 and have been in Peri-menopause for the last 7/8 years and keep thinking it's never going to end. Can anyone give me any advice on how I can manage these feeling please .

Hi marshytiger

Sorry to hear about your parents but Dotty is right that if HRT is used, transdermal method of delivery is recommended to reduce the risk of clots and stroke. Have you been told that you are at risk from blood clots ie do you have a genetic condition like thrombophilia? There have been a couple of members recently with this who have not been able to take HRT but if you don't have this I would push for a referral to a specialist to look at your risk, especially if you are suffering from menopausal symptoms. I am sure you are aware that there are other factors such as weight and lifestyle that affect one's risk of blood clots? You should also get the palpitations chekced out by the doctor but they are a common symptom of menopause and often resolve with HRT. I can understand how worrying they must be especially in the circumstances. How often are your periods now? Do you think you are near menopause?

Here is what it says on this website about thrombosis:

https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/atoz.php#GlossT

Thrombosis
Since HRT is associated with a small increased risk of venous thrombosis, care must be taken when considering HRT use in women with a past or family history of thrombosis. Depending on the indication for HRT and on the cause of the thrombosis, risks and benefits should be assessed. If HRT is to be used, preference would usually be given to the transdermal route (patch or gel) [ref 22]. Specialist advice should be requested. Vaginal estrogen may be used for treatment of vaginal and bladder symptoms
.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for that my periods are now 5 months apart, I have just had a knee operation so I am trying to keep my weight down but if the palpitations continue I will go to the doctors (it's getting an appointment)
They have not tested me but the doctor said he would not recommend Hrt.

It is your right to be tested for clotting disorders marshytiger if you have lost both parents to blood clots. It is a simple blood test although it does take a while before you get results. I have a lot of blood-clotting on my mum's side of my family but I am clear of the most common clotting disorders and so can use transdermal HRT.

As for the palpitations - this is common during menopause but it is always best to get it checked out. Most surgeries will offer you a monitor to wear for a certain amount of time, while you go about your daily life, which will record your heartbeat and the doc can then check it to make sure that you do not have any underlying heart problems. I've been given this twice over the past few years just to make sure that my palpitations are not anything serious.

Palpitations have been a nightmare for me too through peri and although calmed down post, do still come and go.  Was diagnosed with arrhythmia at age 40 and at 45 I had to have scans etc to rule out anything nasty.   Have you tried beta blockers ? Docs are not offering to me as I have asthma and anaphylaxis but I've heard they're really good x
