Utro..vaginal or oral, advice please
« on: December 23, 2017, 05:38:36 PM »

Hi ladies,
I take utro 10 days per month, for the first two months I took it orally and tbh felt OK at first but did notice a few more dizzy moments,  I am migraneur so very aware of any shifts with sympthons. My doc told me I could try vag route so this month, I took it orally for 4 days and 6 vaginally, it went OK but I do feel it didn't leave my system as quick.

Does the vaginal route absorb more and have more side effects or does the oral route have lesser absorption?  I'm back on utro at end of month and need to decide if taking it orally or vag. On the month where I took it orally whilst I had some dizziness overall I felt better when I got to end of it but felt with vag route, I felt more off.

I know every woman varies in her response to utro but I thought the vag route might be easier.

Grateful for any words of wisdom based on your experience.

Happy Christmas xxx

Nin17, first of all sorry to hear you suffer with migraines, I suffer with silent migraines on the progesterone part of HRT so I have to be careful and I also have to limit its use.

Usually when Utrogestan is used vaginally it has fewer side effects and should be more effective because it hits the spot and doesn't get lost in your digestive system - apparently you can lose up to 50% in your digestive system.  I find that all types of progesterone used in HRT preparation stay in my system for a long time (the synthetic types seem to have a very long half life) but that could be because of the added complication of them causing migraines in my case.  Perhaps its a case of the progesterone technically leaves the system but the physical effects/changes, changes to serotonin levels etc. may take longer to revert back again?  I'm not sure if these changes take longer to revert back with vaginal use but I certainly find it has fewer side effects like breast pain and low mood for example and it does work well for womb lining clearance when used vaginally.

Do you know what your migraine trigger is i.e. all hormonal fluctuations, oestrogen surges, progesterone surges?

Hi maryg,
Thanks so much for the reply, my triggers are all hormonal fluctuations and my gp and meno gp felt that hrt could help. Since starting hrt in early October, I have experienced a positive improvement in migraine and get some pain free and crystal clear days, my migraines include pain and some vestibular sympthons eg disequilibrium etc...
We all felt trying hrt was worth a go as I have had some night sweats, dryness etc..
In November, I had a great month on 1mg sachet of divigel and utro, I did have some dizziness after taking it at night and at times felt my head migranry (if there's such a word...). But this month felt differently (i went up to 1.5mg sachets of divigel too) and I think you may be right in that whilst physically I finished utro vaginally,  the brain may still have been catching up with the changes...
Gosh its all so tricky, I've had a hard 20 months of migraine, to get some relief fr hrt is a blessing and I want to continue it...
Wonder should I retry the regime I was taking in Nov, drop back to 1 sachet and just try another round vaginally....or do I test another month orally for the ten days...
Vag was good for sore boobs and bloating so that was very positive...just felt my head bit off more than usual...
This world of migraines sure does bring its challenges ;D

Thanks again xx

Hi,
I would definitely use it vaginally, I had awful side effects using it orally. My moth was so dry I couldn't eat breakfast and I felt nauseous all the time. As soon as I started to use it vaginally all that went away. However using it this way has made my bladder more sensitive, but it's the lesser of the two.
I would love to come off HRT but I'm so scared😟
Hope this help.
