Totally Lost

Hi everyone

I'm 53 and it's been a year since I had my period.  My doc has started me on Femseven conti patches 3weeks ago.  Prior to this in the spring I started getting tired and all aching pains. One doc did all the test a d said it could be fybromyalgia... Seeing another doc she said it was due to the menopause.  The only issue other than the aches was brief hot flushes.  In the past 2 years I've been feeling adventurous and started a part time masters in history. I've been content with life despite the usual family rifts etc. I have a daughter who has Osteopetrosis and I've always been panicky about losing her in any illness but now I've taken everything in my stride and feel like.... what will be will be, life's too short so enjoy the time you have. But....and this is a big but....I feel ten times worse this second week, aches are worse particularly on my right side and my arm seems swollen... and I'm constantly tired...could the patches be doing this even though it's only been 2 weeks?
I feel bloated too...can anyone advice please?

Hi and welcome to MM Flushing fifty.

You clearly have a very positive attitude which is really great.
Aches and pains are typical of menopause for many women and HRT can often be helpful. Unfortunately HRT does bring side effects, most of which will subside over time but the HRT combined Patches are medium dose and, as you have probably started from a low oestrogen base line, your body is getting rather a big hit straight off.

Oestrogen tends to be the ‘feel good' element of HRT but progesterone can be problematic for many women. Starting on a conti HRt is not always the best way, as you are using progesterone every day so more likely to get negative side effects. It is often better to start on a low dose and a sequential HRT so your body can adjust slowly and you can also then tell whether a progesterone suits you or not because you will get 2 weeks of oestrogen only before adding in the progesterone.  A sequi HRT results in a withdrawal bleed each month but many women put up with this to avoid the side effects of continuous progesterone.  There are also different progesterones to try - so some will suit you better than others.

Look under TREATMENTS at the top of this page to get clued up.
I am concerned that you say you arm is swollen - perhaps get this checked. Feeling bloated, sore breasts and feeling tired are typical side effects of HRT, particularly at first while your body adjusts.  I would say you would be better to try a sequential HRt e.g. Femoston 1/10 as this has a kinder progesterone so suits many women very well.  There are many options so it's about finding one that suits. The benefits must outweigh the side effects I'm afraid. I find that lots of brisk walking helps my aching joints more than anything - also Vitamin D with magnesium can help enormously.
See your GP about the swollen arm.  Keep us posted.  DG x

Hi thanks for that advice.
The swollen arm is because I have a trapped nerve in my neck which is causing the swelling and I need physio.
The aches are getting me down a bit by reading posts on here is helpful thanx

Hi Ff can I ask you is the swelling in your arm just at the crease of elbow? I ask because I have neck problems and rotator cuff problems and have had pain and swelling in the crease of arm since last visit to chiropractor, that's what actually made me stop my treatment sessions with him as I truly dreaded those head/neck adjustments.ty xx

As oestrogen levels drop, the muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Frozen shoulder is 'common' in ladies of a 'certain' age  >:(  ::)

As levels drop so the body may become dry i.e. skin, nostrils, deep in the ears, vagina ......... it ain't called The Change for nowt!
