Dry mouth driving me nuts
« on: December 18, 2017, 11:57:09 AM »

Had this for two or three weeks now, and wondered if it was to do with acid reflux to start with (I've been on a very low dose of omeprazole). Now on a higher dose, and oral thrush treatment and I still have a dry sore mouth - it's very dry in the night, too. I think this is a meno symptom  ???
I'm on Femoston 2/10 - plus the estring because usually my problems are below not up top. Ironically I am having a couple of very good weeks down below!
Any ideas? I think I also have a bit of my own cycle going on because I very regularly get period pain and some degree of bleeding mid packet, two weeks before the "proper" progesterone bleed.

Sometimes a dry mouth at night can be caused by open mouth breathing/snoring, which in itself a menopause symptom (in the absence of other factors such as being too fat, drunk or drugged  :o !) caused by lack of oestrogen and everything going all floppy including the back of the throat/pharynx etc.

I did wonder about that but my mouth is tight shut to the point that my tongue sticks to the roof of it and my teeth hurt! I don't think I am sleeping with my mouth open...

I think there are various reasons for dry mouth but I definitely find my mouth is drier since coming off HRT - everything dries out as we age.
I wonder why you were treated for thrush in the mouth? I thought oral thrush was usually due to low immunity or drug treatment? If I have ever used treatment for vaginal thrush I find it makes me very dry down there. Were you actually swobbed to confirm you had oral Thrush?
Also, I developed awful digestive problem earlier this year due to PPIs, I would really question whether you need the Omepraloze. They reduce digestive juices which will dry you out and for me caused diverticulitis. I believe they should only be taken short term as when stopped it takes ages for the body to produce proper digestive enzyme balance again. I have found that small meals of very simple foods is far better to control heartburn. Low fat, very little Caffiene or alcohol etc.
You can get gel that alleviates dry mouth a bit but they are full of artificial sweetners. My mouth gets very dry at night - I just have to take sips of water when I wake. DG x
