Hot flushes back again ??
« on: December 08, 2017, 10:35:20 AM »

Hello I've got yet another question that's baffling me with this is it peri is it not...up til 2 months ago I was getting irregular periods either early or late and missed 2 early in the year and had hot fkushes bad. Then discovered a burst ovarian cyst and the fkushes went but still irregular periods..however last month my period came on the dot and this month but lasted 9 days when it used to be around 4 and I'm getting my hot flushes back...I'm so confused as the fact my period is back to normal time wise points to it not being perimenopause yet they are heavier longer and got flushes back with a vengeance...I didn't start hrt for this reason as I was only tsking it for my inability to get to sleep but now I'm thinking it's not peri at all its something else which worries me even more...help !!!

That's all very typical for the peri menopause stage I'm afraid - fluctuating hormones!!!  Heavy periods or light periods, longer or shorter gaps between periods and longer or shorter periods. If you get prolonged heavy bleeding then this would need to be investigated.  Starting a low dose of HRT could balance things and get rid of the flushes.   DG x

Thank you..but I was getting hopeful it was peri with all the symptoms adding up but I didn't think periods went back to on the dot again even if they last much longer..the flushes I think we're only due to a large ovarian cyst that burst as they stopped after it burst...but now they've come back I'm baffled???
I haven't started hrt as I said it was only to help with my delayed sleep onset but it seems that's no a perimenopause symptom it's more waking up early or with sweats. I'm still awake at 4am sweating so I'm different!
I'm put off starting the oestrogel/utrogestan as my reaction to the oestrogen in femoston back in may made me suicidal within 10 days never mind befire the horrid progesterone part.

What is it that makes you think that it's not peri causing your symptoms? Periods become irregular, shorter, longer, heavier or lighter and then can go back to being regular. Flushes often stop when you are building up to a period only to start up again when the period has finished. In my case I went without any sign of periods for nine months before they started up again and were regular for four months before stopping for six months then starting up again. Peri can last for around eight years. Poor sleep i.e. not being able to get to sleep or waking after a few hours is also very common

Hope you get on ok at the doctor's.

Taz2 thanks for your reply..I didn't think once your periods went irregular that they'd go back to being regular again especially as this is 4 nearly 5 years in...the length iof my period is longer aa in 8 days not 4 I just want to make sure I'm not starting hrt for no reason .  Aa for my sleep problem I've only found 2 people on mm that couldn't fall asleep it always seems theit issue in perimenopause is waking up all the time. I do that too to wee around 8 times a night but that's a long term health issues  whenever I post on here or Google my inability to sleep it never mentions peri stopping you falling asleep.  My gp today said she doesn't think it's peri with my sleep issue being EVERY night not in cycles and said if my period is regular it's not and advised against hrt.. only because she said it is high risk and especially when it won't help.  I'm so confused.  I'm leaving hrt for now as I was very ill on femoston on the oestrogen part and if oestrogel has the same effect and doesn't help my sleep and anxiety ud be worse off.

I have found many women friends who are unable to fall asleep once they are in their forties and therefore perimenopausal. This was one of their first symptoms of peri - before their periods changed. I have found this which may explain it more https://www.healthline.com/health/menopause/menopause-and-insomnia.

I found that by going to bed later I could fall asleep more easily but if I was not asleep within half an hour of going to bed then I followed some guidelines I read somewhere (can't remember where now!) and got up and went downstairs. I would read or watch a bit of tv - no phone or screens though because of the detrimental effect of the blue light - until I began to feel sleepy. I still can't get to sleep until around 1 a.m. - sometimes 12.30 - and then my sleep is quite good until getting up time at 6. I appreciate that this doesn't work for everyone but it's a case of trying different things which will work for you.

What type of illness did you have on oestrogen before?

Thanks taz as you can imagine I've tried literally everything from the usual things to the bizarre and found nothing helps bar zopiclone every 3rd night  .
But it's reassuring about other women being unable to fall asleep I've never come across it due to peri and only for maybe a month tops not years  I'm like you I've got the same routine I don't go to bed til 130am after 2 hours of reading then up every half hour to read in back room then repeat.  I'm usually asleep for 4am ish but luckily I work for myself so don't get up til 8am . I never vary from 8am even when I'm desperate for sleep.
So you've obviously found no benefit in hrt then for getting to sleep? My doctor prescribed oestrigel 1 pump snd 200mg utrogestan days 15 to 26 orally when the femoston made me so ill but she said not to take it until I'm in peri which until my periods get erratic and flushes get daily not just night she said it's no use.

Yes HRT does help me sleep. I no longer wake up every half an hour or so and don't need the loo either unless I'm sickening for something. So, I still can't get to sleep until quite late (or early!) but once asleep it's easier to stay asleep.
