FSH and estradiol levels
« on: November 14, 2017, 09:44:19 PM »

Hi girls

Not sure if anyone can answer this but... I've been on sandrena and Mirena since April this year. Had hormone profile done last week - FSH 41 Estradiol 112 - doesn't mean anything to me but GP says in menopause now 😬

Any idea what it means??

Thank you in advance

I believe the FSH is reading high, which is the indicator that you are in menopause.  The oestrogen level reading depends on which type of reading it is - there are 2 types of readings.   I suspect it shows the HRT you are using is giving you a reasonable level of oestrogen.  Hopefully Hurdity will be along to explain better - she has a science background so can explain better.  DG x

Hi Daisy,

If you have had the gel on the day you bloods were taken then that is not an acurate picture of your true estradiol levels. Also, was estradiol measured in pmol/l? If so, 112 pmol/l is not very high but it also depends whether you still have a cycle and at what day of the cycle the bloods were taken.

My last blood results showed FSH 21 and estradiol 95 pmol/l on Day 3 of cycle. I still have pretty regular periods but feel very up and down and considering restarting HRT. Doctor said estradiol was quite low (I am 46).

I am sorry I can't be of more help.

The FSH is high indicating your body is pushing hard to ovulate (I'm pretty sure the higher it is means the less you're ovulating )

I wouldn't worry about the other if your symptoms are being managed..  the lowest my oestradiol has been is in the 400s and I felt yuck

Hi and thank you girls - the results are  double Dutch to me I'm afraid - have stopped having a period now - last one few months back and just a stain. Sandrena testosterone and Mirena all working - far better quality of life and almost symptom free - some aches, pains and anxiety still lurking but not to the crippling degree of earlier this year.

Should I have stopped estrogen then for a truer reading? Not sure that would have made a difference as Mirena still in and also on testosterone? The GP who rang with results didnt offer much of an explanation other than I'm in menopause? What's does that mean? Surely it's an artificial reading given the hormones I am on?

Does it also mean that I can stop HRT?

GP couldn't given me anymore info -

Hoping you guys can!

Thanks again

I wouldn't worry what your levels are.  As long as your hrt is working.  If you stop it, symptoms will return.  I wouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken x

Oestrogen depresses FSH levels but not sure what happens when you are on a low dose oestrogen. No need to stop oestrogen as why would you want  a true reading anyway? Yes it is an artificial reading.  As Annie0710 says it's how you feel that's important.

As the others have said - up to a point it's not levels per se that are important but how you feel, although if you were post-menopausal that oestrogen level would be pretty low and especially if bloods were taken near to where you apply the gel.  One reading alone is not definitive anyway as they will vary. Protection against osteoporosis is probably not so good at consistently low levels as you have recorded though, according to what I have read (somewhere!).

If you have a Mirena then your periods are no indication of where you are in menopause because they will stop before you actually reach menopause provided it is still functioning.

In terms of stopping HRT - DaisyB, I can't remember how old you are, sorry, but it is important to take HRT at least until the natural average age of menopause of 51/52, and depending on what dose of Sandrena you are taking and how you feel - I would suggest increasing the dose slightly, although I would stress that one estradiol reading may not give a picture of your levels generally. Interesting that you have no flushes or sweats even with a lowish estradiol level - but maybe you are taking other meds which suppress these? You may find that an increased dose alleviates your symptoms further although HRT is not a complete magic cure and other factors come into play to determine how we feel re exercise, lifestyle, stress, sleep etc, and of course ageing plays a part too.

I would be interested to know if there's a correlation between how high fsh is and how bad that makes you feel - does anybody know? My fsh was 1171 u/L in Sep 2011 when I first sought help for meno symptoms (when I found this forum) and I felt very ill. I had my bloods done again in Nov 2016 while on hrt and they were 86.2 u/L.

Daisy B - as others have said, it's how you feel that is important - blood tests are not that significant.  It's sounds as though you are doing well, so I would really not change anything if I were you.  DG x

I had sporadic hormone tests in peri/post because I've had a hysterectomy and so had no idea it was menopause as I had no flushes.  I felt dreadful and my fsh levels were raised but nothing massively high so unless I am out of the ordinary (could well be lol) I'd say for me the level had no bearing on how poorly i felt x

Hi peri

Funnily enough I was reading about this somewhere yesterday but I can't remember where or what website but from what I recall there was no correlation between absolute FSH levels and symptoms as it is the sex hormones themselves which are responsible for our physiological processes and therefore symptoms.

Also I'm not sure about the units  and measurements you quote. FSH is normally measured in IU/l = International Units per Litre or mIU/ml which comes to the same thing. I don't think 1171 exists as a reading on that scale - the maximum seems to be something over 100?  I can't seem to make sense of them in that format in relation to anything I've read.... 86.2 would be considered a post-menopausal FSH level but I understood that on HRT the level would be depressed but it probably depends on the dose to some extent. Can you check the units again?

I would suggest that you felt ill due to menopause of which FSH is an indicator rather than due to FSH itself? Would you agree? Most importantly though is that you are feeling OK now?!

Hi Hurdity

I think it may be that I can't read my own writing and it was actually IU/I 117.  I remember feeling very ill the day I had the bloods done, it was pre hrt though.  I've felt much better since I've been on hrt (although I have to watch diet/lifestyle/stress), but I feel very fortunate that it works and I can function normally x

Hi hurdity

I have been functioning much better - HRT has been a godsend. Anxiety though is always lurking beneath the surface. Pretty bad last couple of days. Are those levels of estrogen in my blood considered low? If so I am on 2 sachets of sandrena and 1 blob of testosterone per day - could I safely increase the sandrena?
Bloods also measured MCV at 101 must confess I'd never heard of this - GP said slightly high could indicate low B12 but not to worry- my fatigue has been pretty bad last few weeks so naturally I am worried. Odd pains popping up again - my mind started attaching thoughts of dread to the pains. So I'd say I'm starting to slip back. Any advice welcome x

Thank you

MCV is high and she should test your B12, ferritin and folate levels

Thanks Annie
I wasn't sure - she told me it was slightly high but not to worry. I'll ask for more tests? Have you any idea what normal levels are??
