Alternative to Elleste?
« on: November 14, 2017, 11:45:37 AM »

Hi  I'm new here but logged on to get some advice from you wise ladies that have gone before me.  I am 46, peri and been on Elleste Duet 1mg for 3 months.  At the beginning it was really good but I am suffering again from really bad insomnia (waking at 1 or 5 and not being able to get back to sleep), anxiety/irritability, hot flushes and heart palpitations.    It seems that it is on the green tablets are particularly bad.

I have previously had prenatal depression which shifted as soon as I gave birth and I did have a bad response to the Mirena Coil so it could be that I am reacting to the progesterone.  I have heard that Femoston might be better but as I also find it quite hard to remember to take the tablets at the same time I was wondering if patches might be better?

I have an appointment with my GP next week but he isn't very clued up on menopause etc so I thought it would be good to go in armed with some information to make sure I get what I need.  Thanks!

Hi Boopbedo

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear that you are still feeling rough some of the time on HRT. Can you tell us what your periods were doing in the time leading up to starting HRT - were they regular or had your cycle started getting longer or more variable? This will given an idea of where you are in menopause - unless you had a Mirena coil until very recently in which case it's difficult to say.

You are right that some women react to the progestogen part of the HRT cycle (the combi tabs - second part of the pack) - but the advice is usually to gvive each type 3 months for side effects to settle and to feel the benefits before deciding to try another - unless you really cannot cope with them.

The other thing is you might also benefit from a higher dose - Elleste comes as 2 mg, so if you decide to change, it's a question of whether to increase the Elleste dose, or change to Femoston 1/10.  As you get further towadrs menopause oestrogen levels continue to fall so higher doses are sometimes needed. Also some women experience variability in absorption ( from tablets). I probably would not change oestrogen dose and progestogen at the same time ie not go from Elleste 1 mg to Femoston 2/10 or you won't know what is causing what.

If you want to look at the different products for peri-menopause they are all listed here ( scroll down for patches) and do ask any other questions if you need help:

Hope all goes well with your doc appointment and do let us know how you get on :)

Thanks Hurdity for the reply.  My periods were regular before i started on HRT so I not that far into the menopause.

I think I will be patient and hang in there for a bit longer with the Elleste 1mg and then see if perhaps the 2mg is better option if the aniexty and insomnia are still domaninating.
