Utrogestan and insomnia
« on: November 14, 2017, 09:37:43 AM »

Aaaargh, started utrogestan again last night after 5 week break because I'd developed signs it had built up too much. I hardly slept a wink and I've still got the horrible wired up feeling I've had all night. I don't understand it - it didn't affect me like this the first time I took it, and I've read so many other posts on here saying it helps people sleep and generally gives them a lovely calm relaxed feeling. My sleep had really really improved on estrogen alone, now I'm back to lying awake all night. Anyone else had this, and what are your experiences of trying other progesterones/progestins?

I could have written this post myself! I also took a 5 week break naughty I know but so nice to just use the oestrogen. I am on day 6 of a 12 day course and have literally not slept a wink, since I started this course,  light sleep, tossing turning, feeling wired up, waking up exhausted, its dreadful. I have mentioned before that Utrogestan has this effect on me and people said no cannot be, it makes one sleepy, most definitely does  not! Feel like I have had a few good cups of strong coffee, get palpitations as well, I stick it out as its only 12 days every 5 or so weeks but I do look forward to the end of the cycle, make no mistake.

YEs, exactly like overdosing on coffee. I don't think we're alone, if you look at the side-effects of ustrogestan insomnia is listed. I'm not sure whether to grin and bear it or try something else  :(

This happened to me too. I was extremely physically tired but my brain although exhausted was on overdrive. If I did manage to drop off to sleep I would wake up again within in minutes. I'm definitely better on the more synthetic progestogen although I really dislike that too

Sorry to hear this racjen. Are you using it vaginally or orally? I try to minimise systemic absorption by using it vaginally and in the week before starting the utro I plump up my vaginal tissues by using Vagifem every night - and then twice a week as normal - in the mornings during the utro phase. Not sure if this actually helps but for me it seems to. I don't experience wired up feelings although the effect on my bladder means I wake in the night and the hour or so before waking I have dreams before my bladder actually wakes me. Nowadays I normally usually sleep so deeply that I don't need to get up in the night but when on utro it can be twice - so it is the bladder irritation that affects my sleep rather than the utro itself - which is very strongly sedative ( and I can do without this!).

I've never tried another progestogen - or rather I used Evorel sequi for 3 months but forgotten what they did (apart from giving me migraines).

You might find that after the initial "hit" your body acclimatises after a few days and you reach a plateau - which is what happens with me. I get a foggy head and get used to a certain sleepiness or groggy feeling while taking it and once it's cleared my system I am quite surprised when I get back to normal. Taking it on a longer cycle as I do (6-8 weeks between the start of each Utro cycle) means it does clear my system properly, I would say, but this is probably only suitable (under supervision) with medium/low doses of oestrogen otherwise the bleed may be heavy or the lining more unstable.

I'm using it vaginally - supposed to be 200mg but last night was only 100mg and that was bad enough. Looking back I realise that it was causing my insomnia when I used it before, I just hadn't realised until sleeping so much better on estrogen alone. Not sure what to do now, I guess I should tough it out this time and if it doesn't get any better give one of the synthetic ones a go.

I couldnt tolerate the 200mg I use 100mg for 12 days a month I am on my 8th tablet of this cycle and had a fairly good few hours of sleep last night so I think it takes a few days to settle but will be glad when day 12 is up.

I've just had these exact same symptoms - on my first month of taking 200mg for 12 days and I felt completely wired and hyped up and NO SLEEP - arggh.  I felt nothing like this when I was on the lower dose. Also, bad constipation for the last few days. So you're not alone, hope you get a bit more sleep at the end of the dose.
