HRT - how long do I wait?
« on: November 02, 2017, 02:45:18 AM »

Hi

Could really do with advice regarding HRT and finding the right one. GP prescribed Femoston 1/10 after diagnosing me as post-menopausal at 42.  Took it for 3 months but really suffered with the progesterone part. I felt so down and not really coping every 2 weeks. The tablets also made me really bloated.

Tried the Femoston patches in between to avoid the gastro symptoms this but could not get these to stick at all.

I have just completed my first month of Kliofem and feel absolutely terrible. My anxiety levels are through the roof, I am teary and have the worst imsomnia. Also having night sweats which are new. Physically I am shaky, with a visible hand tremor and really awful bloating.

My question is how long do I keep going with the kliofem until going back to the GP? I dont feel I can take much more to be honest and am starting to feel quite mentally unwell. Can anyone suggest any other types? I have asked for referral to the local menopause clinic but the GP has refused saying thats not what they deal with. Could I be sensitive to progesterone?  Any advice would be greatly received as feeling at my wits end

Poor you Meno42

My first thought was that at your age and being post menopausal that is exactly what Specialists deal with  ::)

In the meantime if your GP feels able to get you settled on to a suitable regime for your age, then I would just keep going back until you are happily on a regime.

My other thought is, is there is another GP you can see so at least you get a second opinion/input. Have you asked if any of the doctors have a special interest in Women's Health?

Hi Meno42 - you are probably one of the unlucky ladies who is very sensitive to progesterone.  This is very challenging.  It will be trial and error before you find something that suits you but I would stick with a sequi a HRT so you aren't having progesterone every day.  You are young so you do need the HRT - keeping trying things - a good alternative for you might be Oestrogel or oestrogen patches with progesterone, as either Utrogestan or Provera, for 10 days each month - you have to put up with a monthly bleed but there are compromises with any treatment.

Another alternative would be to try having a Mirena fitted ( which delivers progesterone more locally, so fewer side effects) and then use oestrogen as patch or gel alongside.
Do look under TREATMENTS and read up everything on here to get clued up. Print stuff off from this site to show your GP so you can discuss things more effectively at you visit.  DG x

Thank you so much for replying. I'm still getting to grips with this site so will check out the Treatments section.
I really don't want a Mirena fitted too, have a bit of a phobia about them. The GP initially offered me anti-depresssants too which I know is not what he should have done. But I feel so bad now that I am even considering trying them. Even though I know I'm not depressed!
Think I will try another GP in the practice and see if they can offer anything else.
Is it too soon to go back? How long do you think I should give the Kliofem? Could there be a chance that all these side effects could die down? At the moment they seem to be gradually getting worse ☹️

Hi there - I agree - it could well be the progestogen and I would stay with cyclical HRT as Dancinggirl suggests. You most definitely should not be offered ADs instead of HRT at your young age! I would push for that referral because if you are progesterone intolerant then maybe the clinic could recommended a reduced amount of progesterone per month - under supervision, which your doc may not feel confident in doing. As Salad say - that's their job!!!
