Evening all,

Its been so long since I visited last and I'm back for advice yet again.

I came off combined HRT in the summer and haven't seen a period since, nor any symptoms. (I went on Prempak in 2010, aged 40 after lots of awful symptoms, tests revealed peri-menopause, hence HRT.)

So, this last week, sorry for the graphic descriptions lol, but I feel like I'm due a period.....cramping heaviness, breast tenderness, increased discharge - after having nothing for months....

I just wondered really if anyone has been through similar.....I don't know where i am in the menopause, my GP is quite scary and non receptive generally, but I have booked an appointment.

I'd love any advice that you may have, I'm 47 now, so heading to that age, but as I was peri at 40, I'm really confused and a bit worried as I also have health anxiety, so everything is automatically something awful to me.

Mainly as I'd been on it for so long and I was unsure if I'd gone through menopause already of not... also a nurse mentioned to me that there aren't so many benefits after taking it for 5 years.... its all so confusing.

I had a similar thing, reckon I was peri for years and years (hot flushes) but went on to HRT late 40's after blood tests which told me I was post, straight from mini pill to HRT with just a break for the blood tests. As I was doing so well I cut down to half a patch and then whoa out of the blue had a week with cramps, the boobs etc and hey presto the last hurrah! Docs went into panic mode had to have tests etc but in the end just revealed it was my cycle had started up again. They gave me a D&C but for a few months afterwards it felt like I was going to get something but never did.

You're still under the age of meno so it might be wise to stay on HRT to protect bones and heart. Maybe it's just taken a while for your natural hormones to get themselves sorted out?  Hope everything will be okay....

I had the same as you. Diagnosed peri in my mid 30s - had break from HRT at 41 and periods still there but blood tests showed I was still peri. The peri stage can last a number of years. You are still young and you need oestrogen to protect your heart and bones for the long term. That nurse didn't know what she was talking about. Benefits of HRT are needed till, at least, average age of menopause ie 53-54. So the, out of date, 5 year rule means 5 years beyond 54 but the small risks only start at 60.
I'd ask for a referal to a gynae or meno clinic for specialist advice. What you are experiencing could be hormones kicking back in because your ovaries are having a final few gasps.
So, write down all you symptoms , concerns and questions and be clear and firm with your GP that you think you still need HRT.

Yes I agree with Dancinggirl - nurse is talking nonsense. You should still be on HRT until at least 51/52  to help protect heart and bones - but longer than this is also beneficial! I didn't start HRT until just under 54 and still taking it 10 + years later!

I have an appointment with my GP next week and I shall discuss HRT again with him. You have really reassured me, as always when I ask for help from this wonderful forum. I should get bloods too, to see what stage I'm at, peri or not? xx
