Could I ask for some advice please? I was using Ovestin both internally and externally for VA for about 3 months, but recently was put on Vagifem instead. (Still on the initial 14 day load up.) I am still supposed to use Ovestin externally every other day, but about 3 weeks ago I thought it was making me itchy and sometimes a bit too sore. Can't use it now, it seems to irritate the vulva too much, so I was thinking of asking my GP if I could try the weaker generic estriol cream instead. Does anyone else use it, and do you find it is any good?

I am now on Oestrogel, and also use Yes VM 2 or 3 times a day, and Multigyn Actigel if I notice any odour. I took a Fluconazole tablet in case it was thrush, but that made no difference. I'm running out of ideas  Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I've never used Ovestin but I have vagifem and the generic 0.01% for external areas - it's great stuff . I don't insert the generic cream routinely although I previously used the Orthogynest pessaries instead of Vagifem before they were discontinued and these were perfect! When I have my withdrawal bleed, I insert all the tampons with a blob of this cream instead of Vagifem (or sometimes as well as) because these (tampons) dry me out (since I'm mid 60's  ). I've never had a problem with itchiness - at least not for many years.

I have been given the weaker generic estriol cream to use externally as Ovestin started to irritate. (I now have Vagifem for internal use.) Could anyone please tell me how much to use, and do I have to rub it in well (ouch) or can I just smear it around a bit? I was using Ovestin externally every other night. Might that be enough with the generic?

Any advice from other users would be most welcome.

Why did your GP change your prescription anyway?  The active ingredient won't be any different what ever your packet, I checked with a Pharmacist this week  - the amount of filler/packaging might well be different but not the medication itself.  I find Savlon or KY Jelly adequate in the outer area if it becomes dry but not every night.

Changed because I asked to try the generic version, the fillers are different. As you know, these can sometimes cause problems. Still the same hormone although at weaker strength. Thanks for asking, though.

I just use liberally as and when - and when I have my withdrawal bleeds I squeeze some onto the end of the tampon as these seems to dry me out these days -  unlike when I was menstruating in my fertile days. Really, as it is much weaker - you can use it how you like but rubbing in is always good - as it's a cream (unlike gels which are designed to be spread). However if the area is sore then just gently apply it. Can you use some E45 cream initially just to soften the tissues - this is what I use when I get external irritation (but this is in a slightly different area  ) and then the estriol cream if necessary?

Thanks for the advice Hurdity, much appreciated. I like the idea of softening the tissues first, so smeared a bit of Yes VM around early this evening!
