Melatonin messing with periods
« on: October 06, 2017, 10:39:24 AM »

Hello as everyone knows I've got a serious sleep issue for over 4 years and have tried everything my last resort was low dose melatonin. I've been using it for around 3 weeks now and although I don't get to sleep any quicker it makes me more drowsy and have been advised to give it a few months to work. My problem is I've just started my period 6 days early when it's always a week late and I've just read melatinin can cause this to happen.
Has anyone found this themselves..I'll have to stop taking it if it's having such a negative effect or is it just the peri stage ..

Sorry I don't know anything about this - it's a rather specialised area - but I did find this page from the University of Maryland medical centre http://www.umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/melatonin.

I seem to remember your periods were pretty regular before? Shortened cycles are also a feature of the late reproductive stage or anovulatory bleeding during peri-menopause - so it may not be due to the melatonin anyway - as you suggest, and just a coincidence?

The link suggests it should only be used for a short period of time because long term effects are not known - but "short" and "long" are not defined so who knows?!

I hope you manage to get more sleep soon.

Thanks hurdity..I've stopped the melatonin as it's scared me if it has affected my periods that's quite an effect...especially when my periods have always been 5 to 10 days late every month never early...in could be peri but seemed a real confidence..as usual it's my bad luck everything people seem to have great luck with for sleep I get zero effect or adverse melatonin included. Like femoston I mean I only found one lady on here that had very bad reactions to oestrogen stage of the hrt and I felt suicidal!! Never even got to the progesterone stage...oh well back to zero sleep zero hope..😓

Sorry that you have had to stop the melatonin - it is a known effect that it disrupts menstrual cycles. I only know this due to a work colleague having all sorts of fertility testing done before beginning IVF and the role of melatonin was explained to her. She had been using it to combat insomnia and hadn't linked that in to her erratic cycle until the fertility clinic explained the role it has on hormone production. I think this is one of the reasons that cycles become unpredictable if you are travelling a lot across different time zones?

Thanks taz I had no idea at all but it's no surprise like I said I think anything I take will either not work or affect me badly..I can't start the gel utrogestan hrt this month as they want to recheck my blood pressure and prediabetes so it's next month..can't see it helping with my DSPD anyway so there's no rush and that's the main life changing problem for me. Makes me laugh that this is called The Change that is such an understatement..aged 44 my lovely life stopped I died and this new me is horrible.  It's not a life it's an existence 😥
