It's quite a while since I posted in here. I'm 53 now and was on HRT (Femoston) for 3 years and doing really well on it until 2 years ago when I was diagnosed out of the blue with high blood pressure. At the time it was so high that my GP took me straight off HRT and I had to go cold turkey which was awful!! My menopausal symptoms eventually settled and now 2 years down the line my BP is much more stable, although I'll probably be on medication to correct it for the rest of my life. I've never smoked, hardly touch alcohol, although I am overweight.  My problem is that my hot flushes have recently returned big time and I am very tempted to ask my GP about HRT again but I fear she may decline due to my BP issues. Has anyone had any similar issues or experiences with taking HRT with BP medication and if so how do you get on? Many thanks, ER x

Hi English Rose - good to hear from you  but sorry to hear about your symptoms! In addition to Warwick's suggestion - transdermal HRT (eg patches) is often recommended also, to reduce stroke risk etc - so that's another possibility - I presume you are post-meno now? However at your age I would have thought any HRT is OK as you are well under 60. Was it Femoston conti you were taking?

Can you try to lose some weight (little by little!) and also take more exercise ( if you don't already)? These two measures are amongst the best you can do to reduce BP naturally - and will give you numerous health benefits as you get older

You can use HRT, transdermal is recommended, if BP is controlled on medication.

Thank you for your replies. I have made appointment to see GP, but am not very optimistic about what she might say. Will ask re:transdermal patches.
Hurdity - yes I think I am post-meno now, no periods since stopping HRT. I was on Femoston Sequi for most of the time, as didn't get on too well with the combined one when I tried that. Yes I do watch my weight, could do with losing a stone or so. More exercise would be good, not easy to motivate myself - probably due to menopause!!  Thanks again, ER x

I have only just seen your post.  I am fortunate in that I had a hysterectomy when I was 28, so only ever used oestrogen HRT. I used patches for 15 years & had no problems until a female GP saw how long I had been using them & took me off.  I had hypertension all that time.  I still have hypertension but also have autoimmune diseases.  I was recently referred to a gerontologist who specialises in bones.  I will cut a very long story short.  The Registrar I saw, [female] said they recommend HRT but sometimes GPs take some persuading.  About a month ago, my blood pressure took on a life of its own but is now under control again & I will  ask to go back on HRT patches but I will discuss it with all of my Consultants & weigh up the pros & cons but, I believe that the HRT will help to keep my blood pressure under control.  I only started to look into it again, after seeing Kirsty Wark's documentary.

Sounds like you have been through a lot over the years. Interesting that you felt the HRT helped your blood pressure, sounds like you are younger than me though, and I guess everyone is different. Good luck with starting HRT again.

An update from me - saw my (very kind) GP who has re-started me on Femoston (Conti) for a trial period of 3 months. I have to keep monitoring BP though and if it shoots up I will have to come off again, so I am keeping everything crossed that BP stays stable. We didn't get around to discussing patches, but I may ask in future, depending on how I get on.
