Is it possible to combine patches and estrogel?
« on: August 12, 2017, 02:15:07 PM »

I've been struggling to raise my EVOREL patch from 50mcgs to 75mcgs.
It just has the most awful effect on me. Angry, really really angry which is just not acceptable.  depressed .......it also makes my blood pressure increase.
But I like the convenience of the patch because it means I can just forget about all this except for the patch change days.
Do you think adding a pump of estrogel along side the patch would be ok or is it a bit controversial?
Has anyone else tried this?

If it's not a good idea I may just have to stick with the 50 mcg patch and try to put up with the rest.

I can't think of any reason why you should not do that combination.  I used to used Angeliq (a continuous combined oral HRT) with a 50mcg oestrogen  patch to top up because I was not getting anything like enough oestrogen.  I am now on Oestrogel I find it delivers a far higher dose of oestrogen into my system.

I use patches and gel  :)

I wear an Estradot 100 patch then add in a pump (or two) of oestrogel if I still have symptoms. My GP knows and is happy.

Thank you Salad, that's really helpful.
You're on quite a hefty replacement dosage then! Are you doing ok now?

I am and I do wonder if it'll ever stop  ;D
Apparently not everyone absorbs oestrogen properly and I seem to be one of those ladies. The Estradot patches I use now are certainly the best at sticking and staying stuck so I'm glad I've found them.

I'm having a good week so embracing that- long may it last! I hope you find something to help you feel better.  :foryou:

If you don't have a uterus then easy to increase - but I can't see why gel would help any more than a patch because both deliver estradiol. What I mean is if you are experiencing side effects from increasing the patch - this is likely due to increasing too quickly? Why don't you increase to 62.5 mcg? This is what I take ( although doc said it would be unlikely to make a difference). I cut a 50 mcg into  four so use 1 1/4 patches each time and feel fine. You might find this a faff though - although I've got used to it.  Personally I would want just one method - ie if I was using gel I wouldn't want to bother with patches  and vice versa. No harm in asking or trying though - whatever works for you!

Do you also take testosterone and are you post-menopausal?

Hi there, just wondering why you have to stop implants if they worked? Have you managed to find anything that works? After two years of every type of hrt, I've just bad 25mg oestrogen implant and 50mg testosterone implants today for the first time. Scared it will be a nightmare but nothing to lose as don't get consistency with gels, patches of tablets and if I try go exercise a but I go downhill with joint pains and feeling rubbish.

Is there anyone else on this thread that has bad success with Implants?

Thanks x

Yes surgical menopause is the most drastic form of menopause as it is so sudden. You could try adding the quarter patch for a couple of weeks and see how you go - but if your gynae suggests gel then why not go with that idea?  Also  re the testosterone - tests don't really show a lot as it's the lower end of the scale which is used for men ie not sensitive enough for women's levels really ( according to the gynae I saw) so she just treated my symptoms and I've never had a test of testosterone done. Symptoms would tell you if you are low in T - eg lack of libido, muscle aches and pains especially after exercise, lack of energy, fatigue and sometimes depression.
