My periods stopped for 10 months, until Aug 16, when I had one and then another in September. They then stopped again and now another 10 months later (Aug 17). The whole thing: boobs hurt before, tearful, slight cramps, upset stomach and the bleeding.
Really?! Is this weird or just my menopause journey?!

It's very frustrating isn't it? Mine stopped twice for nine months then became more regular again. I went onto HRT at that point due to being unable to cope with other menopause symptoms so I'm not sure when they would have finally stopped. I was 53 at the time. It's so annoying having to go back to counting the months again to get to that magic twelve months!

Hi...im so glad I have found this site...i had bloods taken which show my fsh is 60....i told the gp I had a bleed after 10 months and now I'm terrified I have something seriously wrong as she said I need scans asap....im going on holiday this week and so upset.....I thought it was a normal period as the one before was 8 months....any body had same situation...my best friend is away and my partner is trying to cheer me up but I feel so scared.

Strictly speaking your doctor did not need to refer you for tests because the cut off time for referral for abnormal bleeding is 12 months after last natural period - so it is most likely to be a last hurrah (maybe) from your ovaries. If you had signs of a normal period then this will also suggest that it's normal especially if you are around menopausal age (between 45 and 55).

Was there any particular reason for the doc to refer you? Blood tests are totally unreliable and raised FSH is just an indication that you are peri-menopausal - levels can go into the post-menopausal range even before the ovaries have packed up. There is no harm in the doc referring you for reassurance but s/he should not have alarmed you as chances are it's a normal period.

I agree with Hurdity.  If you have gone twelve months or more without a period and then get one it is important to get checked out to make sure that everything is ok. It is very common in menopause to go for months without periods and then begin to experience them again - sometimes more than once a month - for a while. This process can last for quite a few years. When you have gone for twelve months without a period if over 50 or twenty four months (I think) if under 50 then you are considered post menopausal.

The blood tests are unreliable I agree. Mine showed an FSH of 170 but I still went on.. and on.. to have further periods even though the doc said I would "probably" never have another one.

Thank you both so much for replying so quickly...when the gp gave the blood test results all was fine until I said I had had a period couple of weeks ago....i couldn't remember at the time how long it had been and when I said a year she immediately said not to go on holiday and I would have a scan in 2 weeks....i was in such a state I couldn't take it all in.....next day I dug my diary out and realised I had a period last Sep.....i called the surgery and spoke to a different doctor as the first was so abrupt....she said I should still have scan as levels were high but she  said I could go on holiday first....i feel fine in myself...apart from feeling anxious and the flushes have returned today! By the way I'm 53 xx

Well after a holiday which was spent worrying as I had convinced myself I had cancer i had a scan yesterday which showed everything is absolutely fine...the consultant was disgusted by the way my gp had scared me so much....she is actually writing to my gp to complain.I feel incredibly lucky that all is well and it has really made me realise life is truly very precious....it still hasnt sunk in that I'm ok as it is all I have thought about for the last 3 weeks x

Your GP perhaps could have chosen her words more carefully?  She followed the correct procedure but there wasn't such a rush ......... how was your holiday, maybe add in the holiday 2017 thread?
