Self Help Book on Anxiety
« on: August 06, 2017, 09:12:04 PM »

Any recomendations on a good Anxiety self help book appreciated. I am struggling to find something useful. I do Mindfullness Apps but now worry if I don't find the time or calmness to do them! I have done an NHS 'self help' module course but found thinking about it all and writing stuff down made it worse.

....... and breath.

I never found the books helpful.  Written by people who had supposedly suffered or who simply had no idea that logic flies out of the window!

Finding time to practice is half the battle.  Sitting.  Listening to the birds.  To a cat purring.  To the wind in the trees ......... if you go to a book shop you'll find lots on self help etc..

Hi Roseneath

There have been books recommended in the past so  maybe go to the home page of the forum and do a search?

One that springs to mind which has been mentioned is by Clare Weeks - I'm sure you could Google this?

Also there is a website called "nomorepanic" http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/ which will have strategies besides medication and there is a whole self-help section.

Windy Dryden's REBT workbook is very good. It's the same CBT process I use with my clients but broken down into a work book for people to do at home.

Hi Roseneath
Dr Claire Weeks - Self-Help for your Nerves.  I have had that book for years and dip into it every now and then when I get anxious, it has really helped me.

"At last a life", Paul Davis. This book transformed for me the way I looked at my anxiety surges. Great narration and so so familiar feelings and experiences!  I really recommmend it!

Hi Breeze. I bought the Clare Weeks one...it has some interesting stuff in but I couldn't get one jey bit about floating your anxiety away. The one I chose has a bit of a religious slant to is too so it depends what floats your boat.... I actually downloaded some old Nancy Drew books (I'm 47!) for my Kindle which I read at night. Great, gentle escapism for me!  I have learnt in the last few months that at this time I am going to feel very up and down and probably never get to the bottom of why so am trying to focus on getting out in the fresh air, keeping busy, not hitting Google etc. When I had problems sleeping I really hit the literature on it looking for a 'fix' and I think all the ideas made it worse!

Get this Sparkle if you ever want to feel there is someone out there who has been driven to crazy stuff through hormones. I got so wound up about the miriad of brown gunk which appeared post period (even thought it had been checked out) that I started peering at womens
pads in sanitory bins to see if they were the same!! How messed up is that! I must admit I only did it once or twice as I felt like this was my health anxiety at rock bottom but it just shows how paranoid and consuming anxiety can be.
