Disturbing dreams & terrible joint pain at night
« on: August 01, 2017, 07:32:55 AM »

Recently my constant hot flushes seem to have backed off ever so slightly, only to be replaced by pains in my arms and shoulder which make fastening a bra behind my back almost impossible, and pain down one leg andbibto the sole of my foot which makes me walk like I'm 94......then to cheer me up further at night I'm now getting anxious to go to sleep as I wake up with terrible weird dreams and enormous pains EVERYWHERE!!
Anyone got any advice or similar experience  - maybe if I think I'm not the only one I'll feel better... I tried hrt last year but it made me really on edge after 3 or 4 months...

Hi.. I have to cover my feet in vasaline as I can't bare the feeling of the sheets on the soles of them... half way through the night my legs start aching and I can't keep them still... then I'm up and down going to the toilet.. I've just been to the doctors asking why I'm so tired in the day.. now I can see why! I had my ovaries out 2 years ago at 45 and 2 years into my 2nd marriage... worse thing I have EVER done 😔

Can't really help with the pains except to suggest testing for Vits B12 & D or ask a GP about physio if these persist & GP can find no explanation.  The disturbing dreams though, I can sympathise with!  I'm a very poor sleeper for a number of reasons, but have had nightmares/bad dreams frequently for many years & often wake in panic with these.  Can be brought on by getting too hot in bed & I think I read a study somewhere that found women more prone to them in the 2nd half of the cycle.  If you have supper close to bedtime or a tipple in the evening, you might want to think about changing what you eat & stopping the tipple to see whether this improves your sleep.

Not sure whether you are in peri or post-menopause, but if you feel HRT might help & have only tried one type, there are many options that might suit you better.  If some of the pain is coming from joints, the right HRT may well help with this & should deal with the flushes & any overheating at night.

I have a lot of pain especially in the mornings, once I am up and about it does ease of a little. My pain is usually always in the same place right shoulder and arm, a lot of the time I find it really difficult to raise my arm above my head and its very shaky when I lower it down. My left hip is also a problem, feels really deep in my hip bones. I have been suffering with this since November last year, before that it was in my lower back, but that's not such a problem lately. Vivid dreams almost every night, my husband now looks forward to my morning stories of what crazy things I've been up to when sleeping. I try to laugh at them now because they are so messed up!   :o

The only time I don't have pain in when I lay in a really warm bath. I have one every night to ease my muscles and I put lavender on my pillow at night to try and relax me. Occasionally I take Paracetomol and regularly use Volterol cream rubbed into my hip and shoulder which does help also. You are not alone, hopefully one day we will see the end of it all.

Sparkle, do you find you toss and turn all night to relieve the pressure off of your hips? It can make the night go on forever. At its worst I had to keep getting out of bed and going downstairs to sleep half sat up on the sofa, just so I didn't have direct pressure on them. I can usually get at least the first half of the night with some uninterrupted sleep, most of the time I am unsettled and in pain from around 3 in the morning onwards. I had physio for 4 months to try and build up some strength in my arm, but to honest if I over do exercises it flares up and goes into my elbow. So I just try and pace myself, and use what ever I can in my bag of tricks to get some relief.

It is not as bad as it has been in the past when I couldn't even get to work. As one thing eases another symptom seems to appear somewhere else. I get quite stressed about it all and I don't think that help at all with being so tense.

I hope the pain settles for you soon.

Not too sure where I am meno wise sparkle. As I had a hysterectomy over 13 years ago I didn't have periods to go by. Im guessing about 2 years, maybe a little longer. I got blinding headaches at night at first and night sweats on and off. About 18 months ago I developed awful anxiety and crying for no reason, that passed after a few weeks then I seemed ok for a few months apart from night sweats. I then had another period of anxiety which seemed worse than before and developed low back ache. Then in Feb this year things really got bad. I started to get hives randomly, had a complete break down and couldn't function for about 8 weeks, took myself to A&E so many times convinced I was dying!  It has been since then that I have had chronic pain, globus, flushes got worse, hair started to shed, my skin became dry and I was bruising all over and the hives just wont give in.  GP ran bloods and my liver enzymes were extremely high (still don't know why as don't drink at all)  It was only then I started to think is this menopause. My GP is great and started Oestrogel to see if things improve. I'm just about 2 weeks in and flushes have gone but still have all other symptoms. Finding this forum has been reassuring to know that I am not alone or just plain old going mad! I wasn't prepared for this stage in my life at all, I never had a clue it could get so rubbish.

OMG NEVER POSTED BEFORE  didnt think anyone would answer  thanks so much! :D- its SO reassuring to hear wise people are out there....as long as i dont think im crazy it really helps! Not sure whether I'm going back to gp, they just make me feel terrible, like everything would be cured by anti depressants. Maybe should, to ask about hrt again.
It's also my right arm and shoulder, hip knee - and the foot is the killer pain! When I try to walk downstairs in the morning I am just dreaming of bungalows and feel so old! I loved the comment ." As one thing eases another symptom seems to appear somewhere else" as I now daren't read symptoms of menopause in case if I read it I get it. Been on low carbs low or no sugar diet for two months now which maybe good for hot flushes. I take magnesium calcium, b vits, use lavender geranium rose to get those first few hours - sleep with pillows propping up knees elbows (laughed at a lot by delightful partner)don't drink any more (Can't believe I said that ! Hypno stopped a wine habit two months aho) and if I'm down take arctic root which is AMAZING so I thought I deserved to feel a bit better with all the effort but so far feel worse! Thank you again

OK so learn to do up your bra correctly?  Get measured for the 'right' size, apparently 85% of ladies are wearing one that is too small.  The correct way of putting on a bra is to do it up at the front, bend forward and bring the cups to the front and gently lean the breasts into the cups.  Stand up slowly with a little shake  ;).  Job Done.

I've bumped my thread about dreaming.  4 me it's the meds I take.

As oestrogen levels drop off the muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Over the counter meds should help.

I had the most horrendous dreams last week, and the pains were so bad in my back that I had to use my wheelchair. Then this week the anxiety kicked in after 3 months of none. I think mine is definitely to do with not having enough estrogen as I didn't take it for nearly 3 months. I'm 3 days in again and less pain in my knees, just body jerks and horrendous anxiety. I've been peri now for 11 years I think. Just goes on forever. But dreams, jeez, they were soooooo frightening that I would wake up feeling really scared and carry that on during the day.

Bras? I don't even both these days as I can't bear wearing clothes!

Spakle: spoke to my Gp today and seeing her again in 2 weeks. Referral to dermatology re itching spots as I'm covered in them and got stronger antihistamines to try and reduce swelling. She's also said hopefully over the coming weeks the pain may settle. She was positive about reduced flushes. Like you said it's all trial and error and I giggled at your comment about wanting results straight away. The first few times I used the oestrogel, I kept looking in the mirror.... heavens knows what I was expecting to happen  ;D

Hi caro65, such a shame going to your GP makes you feel terrible. There is a lot of debate about anti-depressants and I guess it's defiantly a personal choice as to whether you want to go down that route. It was the first thing my GP suggested and I was like 'NO' for months, but I got to a point where I just couldn't get out of a really bad mindset. I agreed to try a small dose and I have to say they have helped and I can still remember the day that I found myself laughing my head of at work and realised I hadn't don't that in such a long time.  I used to have a glass of red wine most nights to unwind after a long day at work but don't touch a drop now either..... tragic!! Gave up all the vitamins I was taking as upset my tummy and didn't see much of a difference. I eat super healthy just tons of veg and fish/meat.

Hang in their, lots of great support and caring ladies here. Hope you get some help from your doctor soon and on the right road

:o puddlesmum - I haven't worn one except for very posh occasions as after breast surgery, I swore that if I kept mine I would flaunt them ... a bit of a meander, sorry  ::)

When my sciatica is bad I take 2 Nurofen and take a brisk walk ........ then I have to remember to bend when loading the dishwasher etc..

Apparently frozen shoulder is 'common' at menopause  :-\
