Thank you all for your input. Taz I have read the leaflet you recommended - very interesting. Since posting I have found out that the incidence of DVT is 1 in 150 to 1 in 250 depending on the study, however, taking HRT raises the incidence to 1 in 100.  Knowing that both mentally and physically I would be a mess not on HRT for 12 weeks I am hoping the surgeon will be happy with me continuing HRT and maybe having a course of anticoagulants to help prevent DVT.  Still no GP appointments available, which is not helping my stress

Do not assume that the Consultant will be 'happy' with your decision!  If you arrive for surgery and he sends you home, that is his time as well as a bed wasted.

Do ring the Consultant's Secretary [we don't bite!!!] and discuss!  Your GP isn't the person to ask at this point in time.

I am having a doppler ultrasound first as the consultant wants to rule out any other problems with the veins; then I will have an appointment with the consultant to discuss the results and the way ahead, he has already said that he thinks the doppler ultrasound will just show straight forward varicose veins. So although surgery has been discussed and is the plan this is yet to be confirmed, so I will not be wasting his time nor a bed if he does not agree. It was the consultant that advised me to see the GP to discuss coming off the HRT for 12 weeks as I expressed to the consultant I thought this would be a problem.
