Hello All

I saw a consultant on Thursday for assessment of my varicose veins, during the consultation he advocated that I should stop HRT for six weeks before surgery and six weeks following, this apparently is to reduce the risk of DVT.  I am extremely worried about stopping and really do not want my surgical menopause symptoms to re appear I would be grateful of any advise the surgery apparently only takes 30 mins then after recovering from anaesthetic can walk out same day.

I think most surgeon will ask you to stop Hrt before an operation it's to help eliminate clots. If you are having veins done I think it's probably wise but that's just me. You need to make your own judgement on the situation. Good luck with your op.

I'm thinking it must be because of the type of surgery you need- a leg thing  :)

I've had a breast lump removed and a couple of years later adhesiolysis/ovariolysis surgery and I took my HRT throughout both.
To be honest I don't think I'd be fit enough for surgery if I stopped it.

Hi twice for veins, once for my nose (devated septum) and my foot.
All times I've had to keep the compression stockings on, but the veins I kept on for longer that was the only differnent.
One vein surgery they went in by my groin and the other at the back of my leg.
They have always just asked to take my Medacation in to see before hand but never been asked to stop it.
I wonder if you could ask your doctor who will know you better and see what they say if you mention your concerns xx

Thank you for your posts, the consultant said he would make two cuts one at groin other behind knee and had told me to purchase some class two compression stocking !
As for talking to the GP unfortunately I know it will be a waste of time, he tooks more at the clock and computer than the patient, in fact I have complained about the varicose veins since 1983 other than the consultant last week nobody has seen them, the referal letter describing them was made up by the GP, I was sat less than 4 foot away from him and asked if he would like to see them he said " no",  however I will try to book an appointment, waiting and worrying time is five weeks, unfortunately, other doctors in the practice are apparently worse.
I have read online the risk factors of HRT and having a DVT following surgery for varicose veins  this is 1 in a 100.  I am positive if the HRT is stopped for a total of 12 weeks I will  probably after a very short time be a moody  mess sat in a puddle of sweat and unable to move as my joints will completely say no instead of the usual aches and pains. To say I am extremely worried is an understatement.

I have my veins done 4/5 times over the years.
First time I wasn't on hrt but the rest I was.
I guess it's up to you, it's like if someone said stop my antideppresents I'd have withdrawal then feel awful.

It probably depends upon the operation and if you are having a GA/not?  6 weeks seems an awfully long time to stop HRT.  Maybe a query to Dr Currie?

The surgery is with a GA but I will apparently be up and about in about 2 hours and returning home shortly after that.  I have tried in vain again today to get a GP appointment - fully booked for August unless it is an emergency; (it might well become an emergency as my blood pressure is extremely high)  cannot even book for September as rota not done and appointment on computer do not go that far ahead, other surgeries x2 in area have same problems.

6 weeks seems a long time ....... however, be thankful that you are offered varicose vein surgery as many UK Hospitals no longer operate on the NHS.  Let us know how you get on?  Also, if the bed is offered but not available on the operation day, do you need to stop for longer?  A question to ask maybe?

I had to stop the pill for a month before and after when I had mine done (they don't do them now on the NHS unless absolutely necessary apparently?) and this advice, which also covers HRT,  seems to be backed up by this leaflet found online http://www.yeovilhospital.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Information-for-patients-having-varicose-vein-surgery.pdf.  I also had to stop HRT for a month before my hysterectomy due to possible blood clots - not something I wanted to experience!

Good luck with the surgery. I found it to be fine although a bit painful for a few days.

Tnx Taz.  A worry though if the bed is withdrawn!  It's similar with some ADs if a GA is expected to be administered.

The advice to stop HRT is not to do with GA it's to do with the blood supply to the legs being interrupted due to the closing off of the veins. The op does carry a risk of blood clots and as HRT can encourage blood to clot then to two together raise the risk. My friends mum has just recovered from a clot in both lungs after her knee surgery and I've seen how it has affected her. It's definitely something to be avoided if at all possible I think.
