Hair thinning

I have always had fine hair. It was very blonde when I was young and apparently blonde hair is prone to be fine. When I was about 20 it thinned a little probably hormonal I think.  I am 56 now and going through menopause. Recently I have noticed my hair falling a little. The hair on the top of my head is very thin.This is morning I took a photo of the top of my head to get a better look. I was horrified to see that the hair on top is very thin and my scalp is easily visible all over. My hair firly short and layered. I made an appointment and went for a trim to shorten the layers which makes it look a  it better. My hair is also very dry despite putting conditioner on every day. I am feeling low recently too and this just adds to the feeling that everything is going downhill. Anyone had similar problems and any tips to improve things? I know that aging is a natural process and we can't expect to look as we did when we were young. I never get too worried about    how I look as I did that in my teens and twenties and as I grew older I became more confident and realised that how we look is only a small part of us.  That said this is now adding to my low mood.

i think it is fairly common in the menopause years, my mother in law had a receding hairline and my own mother's became very thin all over.
Before I started HRT mine was becoming thinner but has improved massively since I started it.

Happytobe, have you had your thyroid checked?    You said you are feeling low and your hair is very dry too, so it could be your thyroid.  It could be the menapause causing it, but best to get checked.
 Mine went very thin at the start of the menapause, but HRT helped. I an now post menapause, I take supplements and use products to make my hair look and feel thicker. Try not to worry it will very likely improve.

Read my reply back...didn't mean to sound so unsympathetic!
I would suggest some blood tests like Ellie suggested, I would get your Iron levels checked as well as I think that can cause hair thinning too.

Tinkerbell I didn't think you were unsympathetic. I have had bloods done this week and waiting for results. Last year my bloods were all fine except low in vit D which I took prescribed dose for.  I see you take HRT Tinkerbell and Ellie which seems to help. I'm not currently planning on doing that but I may have to if my other symptoms get worse.  I was hoping to maybe try without it if possible.  Are there any particular supplements you can recommend Ellie?

I used to take a supplement from Holland and Barrett, I think it was called Silicia , made my nails stronger too..It contains horse hair! Anyway it worked for me.....Don't be tempted to try Re Gain.....It is very expensive.  Wouldn't recommend anything expensive that claims to give you a good head of hair, as a hairdresser, I can tell you it does work to some extent, but once you stop using it, your hair will go back to being thin again.  Massaging you scalp often will get the blood flowing and encourage the hair to grow, and a good multivitamin will help.......Products like Redkin thichening lotion and shampoo are very good too.......

My hair has thinned too. A hairdresser recommended sea kelp to me years ago for hair. I think it's good for thyroid so helps if that's a bit low

Tinker bell what HRT are you using?  My hair has thinned in a month on gel and Utrogestan compared to Femodene pill
