Why do some women using the mirena coil keep on bleeding?
« on: July 20, 2017, 07:33:03 AM »

Hi all,

I've had the mirena coil in since Jan. I use it with Estrogel. I had a year of no periods prior.

I've bled more often than not. Some days a little spotting, other days require a tampax.

The blood is always dark, rusty and grubby. If it continues till September, I'll take it out. But I keep hoping it will settle. I feel good otherwise

My question is why am I bleeding still? Why do some women keep bleeding? I'm curious. I know, from a scan, nothing's wrong.

Have you read through this?

https://www.mirena-us.com/q-and-a/

Quote
Once Mirena is placed:

During the first 3 to 6 months, your monthly period may be heavier, irregular, your number of bleeding and spotting days may increase, and you may have frequent spotting or light bleeding
The levonorgestrel in Mirena reduces the monthly thickening of the lining of your uterus
Less thickening means less menstrual flow
Eventually your menstrual flow may stop completely
Once Mirena is removed, your menstrual cycle will return

Hopefully it'll settle as you're just at the 6 months mark now. It also says 1 in 5 women have no periods after using the Mirena, so the majority do still bleed while using it.

I suppose if it continues you'll have to weigh up the pros and cons, I think no matter what decisions we make to deal with menopause, there's rarely a perfect solution.

Good you're feeling well otherwise.

edit: sorry, realised I don't know if you're through the menopause already, I assume everyone's peri which is silly of me.

Hi, thanks for that. Really interesting.

I hadn't had a period for about 11 months before the coil...
