Sort of Dizzy
« on: July 14, 2017, 06:33:35 AM »

I am 51 years old, still having periods but generally every couple of months.  It has happened before but over the last couple of days I have been having a strange dizzy, light headed feeling and wondered if it is to do with the menopause.  It's a weird feeling, not quite dizzy but makes me feel off balance.  Yesterday I felt a little nauseous with it, a bit like feeling car sick.  It seems worse if I sit down which it also strange.  Anyone else ever had this?

Hi Beach Hut - welcome!

Some women do experience the symptoms you describe but it is always worth getting yourself checked out by a GP just to rule out anything else such as anaemia.

Let us know how you get on. Looking forward to learning more about you. Lots of help and friendship on here!

Definitely get the symptoms checked out but your description was one of my first symptoms along with low B12 (both meno and b12 along with other causes can bring this on)

I still get this on and off and just need to steady myself by sitting when it does, I've also (much rarer) had the feeling I'm slipping off a chair

Hi Beachhut - welcome x
I've had vertigo twice - last bout lasted for 6 weeks last autumn. Feeling of being off balance- dizzy light headed and nausea.
My husband has menieres - similar  symptoms but he has ringing in his ears also.
That said best to speak to gp to rule out deficiencies, underlying causes such as ear infection etc.
As well as that gp can prescribe anti sickness drugs - keep in touch plenty of support on MM :)

I've had the same in perimenopause but mine has been very severe and I was told its migraine from hormonal imbalance (high oestrogen in my case).

Hi Beach Hut

One of my low oestrogen symptoms was dizziness- yucky feeling. Although I had palpitations (sinus tachycardia) at the same time too. Once I'd had blood tests and any cardiac involvement ruled out my GP explained it was menopause related. My HRT dose was increased which stopped the problem.

Totally empathise though, as the dizziness affected me driving happily after it happened twice when I was driving.

It might be worth having a chat with your GP  :foryou:

Best checked. I ended up with a 24 hour heart monitor, fortunately all was well. I'm not certain, but think mine could be stress related. But the more I read about these dizzy spells on here, I'm thinking it might also be hormone related. My GP hasn't a clue.

I once went to the doctor with dizzy spells and was sent off to A&E, but it turned out to be just a virus.  Do you think this is possible?

Hi Beachhut,

Dizziness was was one of worst meno symptoms! i had acute insomnia and flushing but it was the diziness I found most distressing, especially in work. It made me feel very vulnerable. As soon as my HRT settled ,this disappeared so I can only think it was hormone related and my doctor agreed. Agree with the ladies on here though, worth getting checked. I did have a heart montor check via GP all was normal.

keep us updated and hope you feel better. i found mine came in waves- days at a time then would abate a while.

I have had something similar since being on HRT - slight off balance feeling when I lie down, swaying, not exactly dizzy but off balance.  Also sometimes when on computer.  Had it worse about 4 months ago and told it was inner ear virus and would clear up within 10 weeks. Do wonder if it is linked to peri-menopause. Had high blood sugar twice in the last 12 months but when re-tested it was OK. I think anxiety and hormones can mess with these things, I'm sick of going to the docs but find I constantly want re-assurance. Last 2 years have been an assault course of symptoms - worry - appointments - check ups - repeat!

Just went tomWalmart to buy a glucose monitor. My son was diabetic from age of 36 months, but from his father's side.  Good to have monitor.  Thanks for the hint.

Two hours later.  Just checked blood glucose 81!!!!!  Should be at least 140 as done after eating

In US normal around two hours after meals 140 and normal usually around a 72-108.  I did my thesis on diabetes, but don't pay much attention lately.

I think that here in the UK as long as it is less than 140 two hours after eating then you are considered normal and not pre-diabetic. It gets very confusing!

Can we buy glucose monitors in the UK? Would be one less thing to nag the GP about. Mine has been up then OK a couple of times; I think stress/exercise can play a part when they test you.

Back on the ' Sort of Dizzy'.   I think balance changes as we enter middle age and computers/ipods make it worse with too much use ...even a few days a day.   I can't go on waltzers any more without feeling very dizzy. I noticed that just before I got the inner ear virus I was hitting games on my kids ipods a lot. I also got it after using the computer. Doc said something about it can be worse when your eyes  have nothing stable to focus on (like when you shut yr eyes at night).  Left off the games for 6 months...it went away.....son got a Nintendo Mario racing game which we hit together...dizzy came back again at night!
