Urinary/kidney infection question
« on: July 11, 2017, 12:47:00 PM »

As some will have read my sister has been really unwell. Yesterday her suspected DVT was diagnosed as a ruptured Bakers Cyst.

She is still very unwell though. She is cold and shivering, sleeping a lot and vomiting a lot too. She is also very restless.
The GP came today. He had asked her to have a urine sample ready. He dipped it and says there is blood and white cells present. The hospital blood tests said she had an infection but they didn't know what was causing this.

He has given her a three day course of ABs as he doesn't want to wait until the lab results come back.

I've had cystitis many times but never anything worse than that.

My question is could this type of infection make her so unwell.

Trying to figure this out.

Yes it could and three days of antibiotics are far too short a dose .....why does any other infection in the body require more days ? but UTIs less ? It's crazy .....and if kidneys and very unwell then hospital potentially.

Thanks Maryjane

I thought it was a very short course. I think she said it was,Trimorth...something or another that she had been given.

I'm worried that its her kidneys as she is really ill.

Yes that's the stuff Hasty.

Hope it does the job. Results will be back on Friday so maybe more will be given or a different one if needed.

Yes this type of infection can make a person feel really unwell.  Blood and protein in the urine aren't always a sign of infection which is why a sample has to be 'grown'.  That particular AB makes me quite poorly ....... hopefully she will be able to tolerate it at least until the Lab. results come back.

I would think that if she is vomiting then this has progressed to an upper urinary tract infection - kidney infection in other words - and it is really important that she gets the right treatment. Sepsis (blood poisoning) can occur quite rapidly if it is untreated. You  have to watch out for really dramatic shivering (rigors) which are the body's way of trying to rid the body of bacteria. Literally everything shakes and fingers and toes go white as the blood is pumped away from the extremities.  The temperature can be either high or low. Mine was low and I didn't realise how ill I was at the time. The lab should identify this quickly - mine phoned the doc back within the hour - and she can then be put onto the "big guns" antibiotics. Sometimes, if the level of whatever it is they measure, is high you do need iv antibiotics to get on top of it quickly.

Cystitis doesn't usually give vomiting. Do you know what her temperature is?

MrsB - try not to worry too much x I've had kidney infections a long time ago. Every time I vomited - had dreadful back pain and flu like symptoms. Always lost about 1/2 stone in weight as I couldn't eat. Taz is right the lab should pick up really quickly.  If she's so ill I'd ring Gp and ask how long results will take as you are worried. Hopefully her daughter has stepped up with support also. 3 days supply is just to get her started I would think until they get the right one - usually a broad spectrum in the hope it will start to work on the infection.  You are having a time of it! Hopefully she will pick up soon xx

GP took her temp and it was normal as far as I know. Although when I visited yesterday her room was warm and she was out in goose bumps.
I think the GP is doing the right thing with the ABs until he gets the urine test results back. This has being going on since Wednesday last week so I suspect it's probably a kidney infection. I think she told me her lower back was painful.
Taz, I am worried about sepsis as she had this earlier in the year but the cause was never found....in fact I don't think they really looked. She had a rotten cold before hand.
To be honest I would be happier if she was in hospital.

The NHS really doesn't do joined up care.
She presents with what is a suspected DVT, bloods are done and there is a sign of infection. It's the DVT clinic so they don't even show an interest into why a DVT patient is sitting with a sick bowl and feeling really ill. I give up I really do.

I'm hoping she might be a bit improved in the morning when I call but perhaps that's far too soon. Hopefully the results will be in early Friday and then if she needs more or different ABs then we can get them before the weekend.
Her daughter has not stepped up at all but I'm keeping my mouth firmly shut as I'm not quite sure what would come out.
She did visit for half an hour this afternoon. Her mothers bed needs changing....was she asked...nope. Did she offer....nope.
Will I do it ....yep very probably as there is no one else.

Hey ho.....I just want to see some improvement.
This has been a terrible year for my sister so far.

NHS is great when it works in your favour, unfortunately that ain't the case a lot of the time.  Nobody seems to follow through these days, each to their own specialty & ne'er the twain shall meet. When our son was ill back in his late teens I went with him to GP, even though he was classed as an adult. I told GP that we were tired of being fobbed off. He'd seen so many doctors. She checked records & bingo he was being treated that day.  I know not the same, but it's awful how we have to keep on at medical profession to get results. She had put 2 and 2 together. Why can't they do that with your sister Mrs B?

MrsB - why does her bed need changing: anyways, she's a Big Girl - she can ask her husband/daughter/neighbour to do so!   :-X

Yes in my experience recently a UTI can make you feel completely unwell I had symptoms of fever 38 plus and was really ill and throwing up

The problem with a Doctor prescribing a general Antibiotic is that it's their best guess but until a urine sample is cultivated then what they prescribe might not help that was my experience with Trim it turned out that it was of no help as my diagnosis of E Coli wasn't susceptible to that antibiotic

But hopefully the correct antibiotic  will be prescribed although bear in mind sometimes depending on the infection it might take a wee while to get on top of things I'm on my 5th set of antibiotics! But basically keep an eye on things for example if she is running a fever 38 or above then I would get back in touch asap with my GP

Hope she is feeling better x

Mrs Brown
I have also felt quite unwell with a UTI. I did once spend a night in hospital around 10 years ago. However i have never had vomiting with it.

She is improving a bit now.
She took one full course of Trimethoprim and then got another course of a different AB as her urine test showed two different kinds of bacteria.
It's been just over two weeks now but thankfully it seems to be under control.

Her appetite is still an issue but she is trying just tiny mouthfuls of food.

Boy was she ill.
