I am considering hiring a portable toilet cubicle for a weekend family event next month.  Plus we have several house guests over the weekend and only one small bathroom with toilet in the house so it seems like a good idea on paper.

Has anyone ever done this and, if so, can they offer any advice or suggestions or good firms to contact.  Or is this just a flight of fancy, I don't even know if you can do this.  I have seen them on properties where building work is going on and at large events but not sure about small private residential events over a weekend?

We hired two for the weekend when we held farm sale - I seem to recall it was less than 200 for two for the weekend - they dropped them off and prepped them on the Friday and collected on the Monday - we had no problem with them and have thought about doing it again when we've held parties but managed with the outside toilet and two in house - ours was a local firm so worth checking google for firms in your area x

thank you coldethyl, sounds very successful.  We just don't have the facilities to be comfortable with a house full even if it is family and then guests dropping in and out all day and a queue for the loo.

I have has one quote of £80 for the weekend.  Does that sound reasonable.  I know nothing about this sort or thing

BJ, our neighbours have had a portable lav in their front garden for about 10 weeks whilst their garden was being done. (Yep I know, that seems like a long time, but builders rarely showed!) It was a stunningly attractive feature especially when the door was left swinging open!

As far as price is concerned, google to check that the quote you've received is competitive and don't be afraid to haggle, that's what the building companies who frequently use them would do! Worth a try! x

Ask your local builders where they get theirs from?   Have a look-see locally at those properties that are being refurbished or self-builds ...... or ring your Council Offices? 

Also, make sure that the over-all price is for drop off, situated in a safe site, chemicals, toilet rolls, as well as sucking out, flushing through and re-servicing prior to removal.  I remember a local band paying over £20,000 for a line of serviced Porta-loos (which I think are a registered Company)  ....... that was from the Thursday until the following Tuesday and the Company emptied and cleansed them several times a day.

well I have had a couple of quotes and I have also researched a porta potty that costs about the same and then I would have it to keep.

It is really only me that cannot hang on if someone is in the bathroom and, although hubby is so tolerant of coming out with his face half shaved, I cannot expect guests to do the same.

Maybe a porta potty in the box room for myself is a better option? Anyone used one, for camping maybe?  Are they any good and do they smell?

They are horrible to empty despite the chemicals.
We used to borrow my sister's caravan years ago and it really put me off to be honest.
It was hubbys job to empty the cassette thingy and he wasn't all that keen either.

oh, would the more up to date ones not be improved.  I did wonder about the, er um, number 2s in one!!!

The chemicals are supposed to dissolve them I think but no matter what, someone has to empty it 

And how many people would use it if you have a house full.

I would rent one then the hire company would deal with the ...errmmmm....stuff.

YEP "Porta Potty" is a trade name and we use ours in the camper van.  Have a look-see on line.  The pot is in two parts, the chemicals don't smell - they break down the contents, we don't empty ours for 5-7 days sometimes; and they are easy to empty.  They don't fall apart either 

There are several throw away options too.  Have a look round your local camping company?

The trick to making emptying a chemical toilet as un-nasty as possible is empty it infrequently!  I camped for many years (from age 14 to 42, to be precise!) and always had a chemical toilet - as an adult it was my job to empty it.  If you leave them as long as possible between empties it give the chemicals chance to work and break down solids - it's those people who insist on emptying the things every time they have been used who find them the most unpleasant.  Also, use cheap supermarket toilet roll - the 'posh' stuff doesn't break down in the tank and is a pain to empty.

I have, on occasion in the past, had to resort to a lidded bucket.  It can't be any nastier than emptying that and that wasn't that bad.
