Nope! Testosterone replacement would be your best bet alongside 'convential' HRT......xxxxx

This made me laugh!!

Seriously - as Tempest said - and depends where you are in menopause and what medications you might already be taking. Anti-depressants can depress libido as can oral (not transdermal) HRT - apart from Tibolone which is designed to improve it, if you are post-menopause.

Hi, I'm pre-menopausal and about 18 months (ish) into having periods all over the place. I'm not taking anything at the moment and don't really want to go down the HRT route. I've been looking into natural/ herbal alternatives. There is one that I have come across called......don't laugh.......Horny Goat Weed 😂🤣😂

Has anyone tried it, I called my GP and she said she hadn't heard of it but I should be ok to try it even know men mainly take it for floppy willy syndrome.

p.s not on train today.

I've heard of it. When my libido was low I did a lot of reading where I came across testosterone boosters, horny goat weed,  hrt and all manner of lotions and potions.

I read a lot of reviews and opinions are mixed on what are just basically vitamin supplements. My personal opinion is to save your money and have a word with your gp but it's up to you.

Tibolone and or  testosterone gel have proved successful for some women while others swear by healthy eating and regular exercise.

We're all different  but I think a conversation with your gp would be the best place to start.  Anyway if you want to give it a try, I'd love to hear how you get on.

Re the horny goat weed  :o - there was a thread on it here and I found a new scientist study, but 5 years ago now so maybe there has been more research recently:

Many herbal treatments have not been assessed for long term safety even if they work in the short term.

I read that DHEA may help.  There was an article that said it may help with hot flushes and menopausal symptoms too.  I'm not 100% sure you can buy it in the UK though as I haven't noticed it in the health shops.  You can get it in health shops in the States and Europe so you may be able to buy it in the UK too.

Katia, yes DHEA has been helpful for some women definitely.  Maca root also. It is considered safe as it's a root, an actual food.  Like anything in life, you don't want to overdo it, but I have not read about any hard and fast contraindications to its use.  It is reported to increase libido and response.  A woman I know has used it with very good results.  I'm presently trying it and so far, very good!  ;)

I tried both testosterone cream (local application) and T-Gel for 6 months and it did nothing for me but give me cystic zits and make me irritable. :(  It is not a cure-all for libido despite what you may read or see).  For many women it works great, but not for all.  A lot depends on the balance between estrogen and testosterone.  Testosterone (at least some of it) will convert to estrogen (via aromatase) in the body.  I think this is what happened to me.  I was on a low-dose patch so my estradiol levels were not very high.  Adding in the T-gel just did not do anything for me except produce side effects.

In what little I've read and seen (others' experiences), your estradiol level needs to be high enough or in a certain range, for the testosterone to work properly. Perhaps that's one of the reasons it is not usually given to women who are not already on HRT.   It's probably not as straightforward (unfortunately!) as just slapping on some gel on and hoping for the best.

Tovahfell,  think there's a lot more adrenal hormones that come to play.  I don't think even the endocrinologists understand it all. Did the testosterone help with muscle wasting at all?

Katia, for me it did nothing at all but cause side effects.  I wish I had something more useful to report.  :(  I agree, that endocrinology is not an exact science and all of this is complex.
